  13. Did you miss April 6 webinar from #California #Bicycle Coalition with April Webster and Wesley Bexton of #Caltrans, "When #Streets Fail: Designing #Bike #Infrastructure for #Heat, #Flooding, and Usability”?

We found it interesting and very important. "A #BikeLane that floods every winter isn't infrastructure. A #sidewalk that bakes at 110 degrees by noon isn't usable, and a #street that only works for part of the day isn't really working.” The info on #trees alone will interest many of you.

Later this week, #CalBike will post webinar recording, with closed captioning. Check for it at calbike.org/events/webinar-ser or on CalBike’s Youtube channel.

If you’re able, we urge you to register for 2026 biennial California Bicycle Summit, April 23-24 in Sacramento: bikemonterey.org/april-23-24-2

  18. Can you spot the “bike lane" ?

  20. Do you find the Bay Trail narrow and congested?

Bayside Council is proposing upgrading a narrow section between Dendy St and Green Point. The shared trail will be split into a side-by-side cycling trail and pedestrian trail, partially situated on a new boardwalk.

This is item 12.2 on the agenda for Tuesday 17th February.

Coming along to Council to speak in support, or emailing the councillors, is encouraged.

  21. Recently Infrastructure Victoria recommended building 12 cycling corridors in Melbourne, and other routes in regional Victoria. In our area, they recommended building a protected bike route from Anzac Station to Sandringham (using the St Kilda Rd lanes). We'd like to see all candidates at the upcoming state election signing up to support this.

PPBUG is planning to ride from St Kilda Junction to Sandringham on Wednesday 18th February. Meet at the intersection of St Kilda Rd and Punt Rd (specifically at the park on the north-west corner of the intersection) at 6pm 18th Feb 2026. We will ride to Sandringham along St Kilda Rd—- New St— Hampton St. Stopping as needed to discuss what is needed and take photos.

    Route description:

All welcome; RSVP optional (for last minute changes of plan due to weather etc) or to stay in contact with the campaign.

  22. Glen Eira council to improve the connection between the Queens Ave trail and the Djerring trail.

    gleneira.vic.gov.au/about-coun

The slip lane (between the two As in diagram) looks pretty sketchy--- Bayside has just got rid of a similar slip lane at the intersection of New St and Bent Ave which was the site of many crashes. Drivers hoping to make the turn in a gap in traffic fail to see people on bikes coming through the intersection-- very dangerous if they have not stopped.

  23. In November 2025, Infrastructure Victoria released Victoria’s infrastructure strategy 2025–2055. One key recommendation was to invest in 12 cycling corridors in Melbourne and a network of cycle corridors in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Wangaratta over the next 10 years.

The one in our area is the Anzac Station to Sandringham route. This would be a massive enabler--- would allow people from a big catchment in the south-east to access the St Kilda Rd bike lanes and the CBD beyond.

    Blog about the route: ppbug.org/bug-blog/2026/1/2/an

We'll be riding the complete route together soon to look at the challenges, dates TBA.

  24. So there's a new bike lane in Thessaloniki... Not connected to any other bike lanes... But the biggest problem is, it leads straight to an electricity pole, standing proud in the middle of the bike lane.

  25. I don't think that the urbanist @BrentToderian was talking about City of Port Phillip specifically, but in this podcast he describes exactly our experience: doing the good thing, but in a really bad way is WORSE than doing nothing. In 2022, in a "pop-up bike lane trial", we got very minor changes--- mostly sharrows, and curb extensions that reduced crossing distances for pedestrians. They were poorly communicated and we're still dealing with the aggravation and hostility engendered. He also pings only doing the things that are easy--- here the changes proposed for Inkerman St come to mind, that have missed the chance to make a proper, protected bike lane, in favour of a half-arsed painted lane.
