I'm so glad I stumbled on this!

I'd never seen this impromptu Harry Belafonte tribute of a surprise "Banana Boat Song" rendition by the singers at We Are The World/USA For Africa way back in the '80s.

Such fun. Enjoy! #RIP #RIPHarryBelafonte

Every time the chant, "Day-O" is played at any sports stadium, you should point your finger to the sky and thank the man who made it happen.

Harry Belafonte, the singer, actor and (probably most notably) activist did so much in the past eight decades. Inspired both Sam Cooke and Public Enemy, supported the presidential campaigns of JFK and Bernie Sanders.

In recent years, I fell in love specifically with his music. I wrote this review of his 1956 album Calypso on my blog a while back, and I hope it does him justice. Justice was all he ever fought for, and he deserves it in return

When Harry Sat In. Harry Belafonte’s week-long hosting Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show” in February 1968. Among Harry’s guests were MLK Jr.

Few words can do justice to the icon and absolute legend that we must say farewell to today. Harry Belafonte, you were truly a towering figure that made this world a better place. Thank you.
#RIPHarryBelafonte

Aside from Andrew Young, who remains with us, Harry Belafonte, one of Harlem’s most legendary sons, was the last giant of the Black liberation/civil rights movement. A towering figure. A close friend and confidante of Dr. Martin Luther King. The deep impact that Sir Harry (as I call him) had in activism and human rights in the 1960s and beyond is immeasurable.

RIP Mr. Harry Belafonte! The man who brought Calypso music to a new level.

I only found out about this one recently, but he did record a version of greensleeves back in 1958: https://youtu.be/B2pO85QyEGs

This weekend I heard “The Banana Boat Song” where I don’t usually hear it—during NBA Playoff games (song is often heard at ⚾️ games.)

Harry Belafonte’s song played during Knicks gm3 win Friday in NY & during Warriors gm4 win Sunday in SF.

Coast to coast.

Foreshadowing?

“Harry Belafonte is a man who has always rallied to good causes. He has always raised his voice against the dark. For that, we owe him so much."

The most famous and priceless film Harry Belafonte starred in. The chemistry between he and Dorothy Dandridge absolutely crackled.

"...The Negro people have strongly and fully taken the bit in their teeth. They're asking absolutely no quarter from anyone. But I do say that the bulk of the interpretation of whether this thing is going to end successfully and joyously or is going to end disastrously, lays very heavily with the white community. It lays very heavily with the profiteers, it lays very heavily with the vested interests…”

Two great films from Harry Belafonte’s amazing career: “Odds Against Tomorrow” and “Buck and the Preacher.” One, a crime film that exposes racial tensions, the other, a story of the post-Civil-War Black diaspora. Belafonte made films that mattered. #RIPHarryBelafonte

"'We have achieved a lot in my lifetime,' he said. 'Dr. King was not about nothing, Eleanor Roosevelt was not about nothing. I think in the final analysis that we shall overcome, because what we did is…we left a harvest that generations to come [will] reap. That they have not yet plowed. That they have not yet harvested.'"

Rest in Power Harry Belafonte. He was one of Harlem’s greatest heroes. One of America’s finest troubadours for justice. Author, actor, singer, activist, humanitarian. Rest easy Sir Harry. You are loved and already sorely missed.🖤🙏🏿
