Here in the #UK, #IceCream vans play a little tune (usually #Greensleeves) so you know they're in your neighbourhood.
This week, while visiting #Istanbul, I learned that in #Turkey the water and propane delivery services each also have their own little tunes. And a friend from #India says that his vegetable delivery truck also has its own music.
I feel like we're missing out! Maybe my milkman should play a tune? Or perhaps the couriers who come by could have a song that says, somehow, "we couldn't be bothered ringing your doorbell so you'll find your parcel in your recycling bin"?

Greensleeves Project update for World Embroidery Day.
There are a few embroidered items among the gifts presented to Greensleeves in the song, including "a smock of silk, both faire and white, with gold embrodered gorgeously"
The wonderful Juliet Braidwood is working on the smock, embroidering it with black silk and gold thread, using designs taken from contemporary sources. This photograph shows part of her work on a rose, taken from a detail on Nicholas Hilliard's 'Pelican' portrait of Elizabeth I, c1575.

With its haunting melody, and the romantic myth that it was written by #HenryVIII as a love song for #AnneBoleyn, Greensleeves has remained popular over the centuries and today, is probably the best known of all #Tudor #songs.
However there is no proven connection to Henry VIII, and the earliest mention of the broadside ballad called #Greensleeves was not until September 1580, (some 33 years after his death). It was an immediate hit, and a number of imitations and parodies were produced in the following months and years.
Our recording uses the text from 'A Handful of Pleasant Delights', 1584 - the earliest surviving source. There are many verses, some of which contain lovely descriptions of #Elizabethan clothing and other aspects of #MaterialCulture

In 1966, The Beatles’ “Yesterday” was nominated for a Grammy for Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocalist or Instrumentalist. It had some stiff competition - a big band arrangement of Greensleeves by Gil Evans!
They both lost to Frank Sinatra, but still, pretty neat
My Greensleeves-ing has expanded into searching episodes titles in podcast directories and now I’m listening to two dudes talk about an over-dressed golf player nicknamed “Green Sleeves”.

This rendition is sung by Irish Singer Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, one of the founding members of the group Celtic Woman. A harpsichord adds a very baroque-feel while a tin whistle provides counter melody

It’s mainly pianist Mike Garson jamming out on the tune for a couple minutes before the band transitions into “Just Like You Imagined” - I think that counts!
Mike Garson was David Bowie’s long-time concert piano player and he’s done impromptu Greensleeves playing like this on stage before

A History Of Dub - The Golden Age (mid seventies - early eighties) CD. A real cool cheap promo cd from 1995. Released by #MunichRecords to promote the #dubwise releases on the #BloodAndFire, #Heartbeat and #Greensleeves record labels. I sold loads of this cd while working in the #GroovyMusic / #Mundial recordstore. Still a killer no filler compilation.

In common with many #broadsideballads, this carol appear with lyrics but no music. Instead, instructions are given for the choice of melody - in this case, the popular tune, #Greensleeves.
