Went to my local nursery to get some lettuce transplants for our small bunny. Found one remaining Salvia brandegeei, Santa Rosa Island sage. Imperiled in conservation status. A population on fire ravaged Santa Rosa Island & a small strip under development pressure in Baja. The plant looks like dried sticks in a pot. I've helped along other strugging natives. It's under my fig tree to nurse it along for now 💚 #NativePlants #RibbonRefuge

my summer plantings are for the bees. with the scorching temps, I'm grateful to get flowers on this urban heat island. it's unlikely the temps will allow pumpkins to fully develop. the squash bees are the few natives in my area that rely entirely on one kind of flower. if any of last year's bee babies made it, I want to be sure there are flowers ready to receive & help the next gen. #gardening #RibbonRefuge

a female carpenter bee let me know she's still here in the extreme heat. this morning, she buzzed near my head, found the few fresh salvia blooms, and came right up to my nose before leaving. #ribbonRefuge #bees

Still just the pair. Hopeful more will join. 7:15 ish pm PDT and they were getting comfortable on their chosen bloom. The video really shows their green eyes, and brown/gray bodies matching the dried bloom. The Encelia they patrol by day & sleep in by night has tripled in size from when I planted it last year from a 1 gallon pot. Melissodes on Encelia. #SleepingBees #NativePlants #RibbonRefuge

First sleeping bee of 2026 💚
Light drizzle kept this male Melissodes nestled on the Encelia. Meanwhile, a female Melissodes was bouncing from flower to flower gathering pollen. The temps and cloud cover have been erratic. Relieved to see both are here again. Keep planting & protecting ribbon refuges 💚

Expected high of 89F, 12 degrees above average, with wildfires on Santa Rosa Island and Simi Valley to the west.
