With one quarter of 2025 behind us, I took a look at Comics Plus' circ data and wasn't surprised to see "backlist is frontlist" continues to be the #ReadAllTheComics secret weapon.
One of the main advantages of a deep, diverse digital collection for readers to explore is they can choose to read whatever’s most interesting to them at the time — regardless of how new or old, mainstream or niche, popular or “under the radar” a book might be.

"When we know what their issues and concerns are, we can be better partners with them in our shared goal of getting more books by independent publishers into our collections." Becky Spratford
Librarians have to be willing to meet smaller publishers halfway and do a little extra legwork to learn about their titles because traditional marketing channels simply aren't designed to support their discovery.

Publishers pitching their titles on panels remains an oddly popular format with librarians, so I was excited to mix it up a bit by focusing on backlist instead of the usual frontlist approach in this one.
It was a great conversation, and you should definitely watch the whole thing!

After an online training on #ReadersAdvisory for Millennials and Generation Z, I made a mega list on Libby called “Romantasy” and ended up needing arthritis cream on my wrist today with all the mouse work. Overdrive findability is tough. Metadata is scant. Neither author nor genre searches recovered most of these. It’s almost like they want to bury your old content licences.

I don't love libraries using "bestsellers" to drive collection development decisions (esp in digital where budgets are limited). OTOH, if you're going to do it, you better understand the nuances of different "bestseller" lists — and what you're missing if you rely on the NYT's curated lists or Amazon labels.
Becky Spratford (RAforAll) has a good breakdown for finding the self-published bestsellers you're probably unaware of.
