Nach kurzer Recherche habe ich nun ein #Pocketbook. #Onleihe und #Overdrive bzw. #libbyapp sind integriert und das Ausleihen von #ebooks bei der #vöbb funktioniert einwandfrei. Dateien von meinem #Linux Rechner kann ich außerdem per Kabel einfach rüber kopieren, oder über #calibre verwalten. Kein Adobe oder Windows notwendig.

Nettes Extra: ich kann Notizen und Anmerkungen im Dokument mit dem mitgelieferten Stift erstellen. Klappt bisher alles ganz reibungslos.

Decided to use the #LibbyApp and resurrect my Kindle 2.0 and discovered the lithium battery is permanently dead. Used #iFixit to open and take it out and have ordered a replacement from a random Amazon seller. Hopefully it will arrive in a few days 😐

Currently listening to "What's Our Problem: A Self-Help Book for Societies" by Tim Urban on Libby for free through my local library.

Can't wait to get my hands on the hardback copy.

Other audiobook readers, this happened to me on 3 different apps now so I wanted to alert others of this. As I usually do, I look up what new books my favorite narrators have narrated. Now, when I click on the narrator name, I am treated with audiobooks with their AI clone instead of their human narration. I already checked. That narrator is alive and still is recording audiobooks. Always listen to audiobooks before you make a purchase/borrow. Even now, it is incredibly obvious which ones are AI and which are narrated by the original human. This has happened to me on Hoopla, Libby, and on Audible so far. I know the audiobook narrator I looked up works for Recorded Books. It would not surprise me if they claim that they will never produce AI narrated audiobooks and then turn around and exploit their narrators without them knowing about it.

I took the liberty of emailing the narrator about this. This was his reply.

Robert,

Thank you very much for alerting me about the clone of my voice. As a Black narrator, this deeply troubles me, especially since I did not make this clone nor did I authorize it's creation. I will be extra vigilant as to what publishers I work with in the future and will make my displeasure very clear. I cannot thank you enough for your advocacy and for alerting me. In a hostile world that's more than willing to embrace this technology, we desperately need more people such as yourself.

Thank you again, my new friend!

Overdrive findability is tough. Metadata is scant. Neither author nor genre searches recovered most of these. It’s almost like they want to bury your old content licences.

Morning Folks! I've fallen down on the whole daily blogging thing over the break. In part, I've been fighting generic crud and in other parts, I've just needed the time off.

I want to get away from Amazon, which includes Audible. I‘ve been subscribed to Audible for years and love that new Star Trek books are available there.

My research into alternatives brought me, once more, to what my library has to offer. Well, to make it short, Star Trek wise it‘s an absolute desert. Even through Libby it‘s a wasteland. I will mark all Trek books I’d like to read or listen to on my wishlist now, which, as I understand it, will inform my library that there‘s interest in that book. But let‘s be real here, I doubt there‘s lots of demand for these books, let alone in English, in my region. (Middle of nowhere in Germany)

I also put Patrick Stewart‘s „Make It So“ audio on hold. I‘m number 5 on the list which means a wait of ca. 10 weeks. At least that book is in demand. Maybe it‘s a sign that Trek books may be more in demand as I thought? 🤞

We’ve all flipped to the end of a book to make sure that everything will turn out ok for a favorite character, right?

For the first time in my life I’ve just done this with an audiobook: “The Good Sister” by #SallyHepworth. I’m using the #LibbyApp. I dropped a bookmark and then hopped to the last couple of chapters and sampled a few moments so I could be sure that Fern and Wally would be ok. *Whew* what a relief. Now I can continue to listen stress-free. #bookstodon
