  1. The words ‘mater’ and ‘neckin’ aren’t in this mornings #Quartiles answers, and as a Midwesterner i feel attacked.

I’m doing the Apple News #Quartiles puzzle, there’s an interesting pair of words, amatory and defamatory. At first glance they look similar and one might think they were close in meaning, i.e., the latter is a modified version of the former, signaled by “def”. But they’re not. The images show definitions from the OED. Does that seem weird/cool to you? Do you know of another similar pair of words? Or maybe a third to these 2? Is there a name for that?

  4. As someone with a career in mathematical optimization, I approve of today’s Apple News Quartiles puzzle. #quartiles #optimization

  6. I managed to find a four tile word in Quartiles that is not one of the words we need to find and I think that means I win the game for all time? #Quartiles

  10. Asked to help debug an online maths question about #BoxPlots, and learnt there are conflicting interpretations of the 1st and 3rd #quartiles which matter with small datasets like teaching examples!

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quartile

It is also not easy to see from the documentation which any plotting library actually uses, e.g. seaborn seaborn.pydata.org/generated/s

  12. From Wikipedia:

"For discrete distributions, there is no universal agreement on selecting the quartile values."

    Fucking statistics...

  14. It’s becoming a bit frustrating finishing #quartiles with 1-4 total words left on a daily basis. I don’t have the will to brute force it and the words I miss are usually nonsense.

  16. Wow it took me way too long to realize you can make words of any length in #Quartiles.

  18. Production from a #PV plant, presented as #quartiles per week. Advantage: You'll still be able to recognize the seasons but also the effect of the weather.

Hard to compute? Really not… #DuckDB has #quantile_cont and #quantile_disc plus min and max for the whiskers in the plot and it boils down to mere 16 lines of #sql
