Finally a break in the storm, we stopped by #Project9Brewing to check out one of their latest releases, Almond Joey Imperial Stout. At 11% the release is a bit fortuitous given the chill in the air and the onset of Wintery-thoughts.
On draft, Almond Joey produces a firm khaki-tan head, resting on a bed of near-dark blackness. With a ridgeline of burgundy at the bottom of the glass, there remains an antique curtain of lacing inside the glass.
Swirling and sniffing, we recover notes of pungent coconut, a hint of fresh earth, dark coffee, some vanilla, and dark baking chocolate.
Sipping, we recover many of the aromatics along with some nuttiness from the almonds, some anise, and a lingering sharpness accented by the combination of cacao and hops. Overall, Almond Joey has a strong mouthfeel, a most definite alcoholic warmth, and a lingering stickiness that carries with it some bitterness.
Take our advice and either share a can with a friend or stick to a 5-ounce pour at the brewery. -
