@zkarj Here's a snippet of one of the recordings I made yesterday to give you an idea of just how many korimako were singing and why I was struggling to count them in places.
This was in the core of the native forest on the southern side of Sugarloaf up in the Christchurch Port Hills. It's a naturally regenerated native forest with a few older old growth trees in it, and the #ChristchurchCityCouncil Port Hills rangers do pest control in the reserve.
It didn't used to sound like this!

Here are some photos of the route to give you an idea of the terrain. The Port Hills is an incredible asset to Christchurch city, and it's a large part of why our city's gardens are visited by native birds.
Plus, there are so many walking and biking tracks to explore!

#NZGeographic has a story featuring Tim Curran from #LincolnUniversityNZ who studies plant flammability & green firebreaks.
"the Port Hills are stacked with species that are on the highly-flammable end of Curran’s plant-barbecuing tests—but this may change. On the third day of the fire, Christchurch mayor Phil Mauger told RNZ that there needed to be “a wider community conversation” about whether pine forestry was still a sensible use of the land."

Here's Marley's Hill in the Port Hills of Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ, as seen from our house. The photo of it on fire is this morning, the other I took on Saturday.
I've been taking photos of this view every fortnight from our deck, watching how the hill has been recovering from the 2017 Port Hills fire. The clock has just been reset.
See Flickr for the full-res photos if you want to zoom in.

And here's the same view of Marley's Hill in the Port Hills, Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ, the year after the 2017 Port Hills fire, when the dead trees had been clear away.

On the one-year anniversary of Cyclone Gabrielle taking lives and livelihoods across the North Island, raging fires now threaten homes and lives in Christchurch’s Port Hills.
This is what the Climate Crisis looks like and the Luxon Government’s actions will make it worse.

This fire is going to burn all night and I expect for a day or two. The red lights on the left are the TV tower on Sugar Loaf, the fire up Worsley's Track, all being watched on by the Southern Cross and Milky Way. #PortHills #Fire #Christchurch

@aligorith Here's the Christchurch City Council's map and guide to Watling's Track: https://www.ccc.govt.nz/parks-and-gardens/explore-parks/port-hills/ohinetahi/watlings-track/

@aligorith I hear miromiro more often than I see them. They will sometimes approach to a high pitched "pishing" noise.
They're more common further west in the Port Hills, like in Ohinetahi Bush and Omahu Bush. For example, there's a steep zig-zag track down Watlings track from Summit Road into Ohinetahi Bush where I usually find several miromiro.
Plus, the adults have bright orange feet!
