  1. Neil Young, Time Fades Away, 1973 on Reprise

Live album recorded with the Stray Gators on the tour following the release of Harvest. The rear cover lists the venues at which each track was recorded as well as the members of the Stray Gators (Tim Drummond, Johnny Barbata, Jack Nitzsche, and Ben Keith) and special guests David Crosby and Graham Nash.

Reportedly Young didn’t love the tour and this was out of print for years, not released on CD until 2017 – but I think these performances sound great.

My copy, via Crossroads Records in Portland OR, is a Pitman pressing, unfortunately not including the original lyric poster.

  2. Cyndi Lauper, True Colors, 1986 on Portrait

Second studio LP from Lauper, following the massively successful She’s So Unusual which had already gone four times platinum.

Covering “What’s Going On” was, well, a choice. But I love the “Iko Iko” and the originals: the title track still makes me have all the feels, and “Boy Blue” – which was released as a single, raised money for AIDS research. (The whole album is dedicated “with love to my beautiful boy blue” – Gregory Natal.

Lots of guests here, perhaps as a result of her stratospheric success on the first LP: Billy Joel, Aimee Mann, The Bangles, Pee Wee Herman, Anton Fig, Adrian Belew, Nile Rodgers, and Robert Holmes.

If you haven’t seen it I recommend Let the Canary Sing, a documentary on Lauper (currently on Paramount Plus).

My copy—via the Worcester Record Riot—is an early Pitman pressing on the Portrait labels with the original printed inner.

  3. Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan At Budokan, 1979 on Columbia

Third of three live Dylan albums from the 70s (Before the Flood and Hard Rain are the other two), and the second to be 2xLP in format, At Budokan was recorded at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo in February and March of 1978. (The US release was in 1979).

Many folks don’t care for the arrangements here – very different than the originals in most cases, using the musicians from Street Legal and supplemental pedal steel, horns, flute, and recorder (!). It’s actually grown on me over time, though I get it can feel a bit droney. But I’m something of a Dylan completist- your mileage may vary.

My copy—another one via a record fair at Mill No. 5—is a 1979 Pitman pressing, gatefold, on red/yellow Columbia labels.

  4. Got bored and spent an hour tidying. It was satisfying to throw empty boxes down the stairs. Jasper and Sapphy investigated under a chair cos I cleared some space, but they didn’t find much. I kept a berry-red wig for a Black Butler cosplay I planned a decade ago, but removed other bags of stuff.

Idk where we’re gonna find homes for #stenography #shorthand #dictation #CassetteTapes, though amazingly I find some are still sold. Lots of #Pitman books too, but we’re keeping those.
