  2. TechCrunch: Google quietly launched an AI dictation app that works offline. “Google on Monday quietly released an offline-first dictation app called ‘Google AI Edge Eloquent’ on iOS to take on the likes of Wispr Flow, SuperWhisper, Willow, and others. The app is free to download, and once its Gemma-based automatic speech recognition (ASR) models are downloaded, you can start dictating on your […]

The "Speed of Sound" app by @zugaldia, once you set up a custom global keyboard shortcut that doesn't conflict with GNOME's, is pretty amazing: flathub.org/en/apps/io.speedof

This is the first time I experience reliable speech recognition for #dictation on the desktop, particularly on #Linux! Until now I had given up on that being a possibility.

Works really well in English. It struggles with French, but who doesn't?!

My injured finger is still too sore to do any typing. Luckily, , an dictation app has been coming in clutch for Mac input needs while my finger heals.

It does the audio /processing locally (which is the only way I think voice data should be managed). I tried it out with the free trial and it's been surprisingly accurate and easy to use.

I recommend it if you're into dictation apps and I'd trust this more than Apple's built-in dication.

  9. @scottwillsey sent in a fabulous review of the dictation app Wispr Flow. I'm wild about it too, so I added my two cents at the end of his post (hope you don't mind, Scott!)

  10. Quietly exciting news from Estonia. Today they held a national dictation exercise (radio/video) with a 30 minute cut-off.
8,451 entries. Only 71 were flawless, even with permitted alternative spellings!

  11. Handy: privacy-preserving open-source speech-to-text.

    bouvier.cc/tech/handy

I've recently discovered #Handy, a small #speechtotext (#dictation) application, that is open source and can use only local AI models on Linux, preserving the privacy of what I'm saying out loud by not sending it to some cloud servers. I found it handy (lol), so I figured that I could share some hardships that I've run into while setting it up on #ArchLinux #GNOME #wayland.

Thanks to @Jolivier for the discovery!

  12. Another day, another AI app conquering new territory! Wispr Flow's AI-powered dictation is now live on Android, after its grand tour on Mac, Windows, and iOS. Are we ready to delegate all our typing to the machines, or is there still a charm to the keyboard?

  13. One cool thing that I love is that you can add the Wispr Flow dictate function to your action button on your iPhone. You can hold and release to speak and hold and release again to stop dictation. Quite intuitive.

  18. I am keen to hear from anyone here who uses dictation or transcribing software/services that do a good job of transcribing sound files (WAV or MP3) into text documents.

I am heading into a contract that will require me to do 30+ interviews and these will need transcribing for theming and needs analysis purposes in a fairly short time frame.

I use a MacBook and a Zoom digital recorder with MicroSD cards for storage and transfer.

Any and all advice, experiences or recommendations would be appreciated.

  26. "Vide coding" is a hot topic right now, with new AI tools allowing you to describe what you want to work on with a prompt, and it appears in front of your eyes.

I look at Aqua Voice, which lets you "vibe code", take notes, write, and much more and as you can see from Premiere's transcript, it handles things better!

  27. There are almost an incalculable number of reasons to hate the application of LLMs everywhere (I lead an LLM-heavy project at dayjob, oh my goodness, do I know...)

But the primary one which has absolutely changed the way I work is local #dictation which *actually works* the way I need it to.

I use #MacWhisper for this, although there are a ton of options.

It's all local. It's fast. But the best thing is that it is incredibly good at skipping over "ums" and pauses. It doesn't care if I pause for 30 seconds to think about what I want to say next. There's not a rush because it's going to cancel and send everything to the cloud, half-baked.

MacWhisper also enables this in any type-able field on your whole Mac. I use this *constantly*.
