I've recently bought the Professional Teeline textbook to brush up on my Teeline and finally learn all the affixes, special outlines, etc.

I'm happy to see a book that tries to apply Teeline to modern language, and that is independent of NCTJ (which "owns" Teeline), and that they are planning to publish a modern Teeline dictionary.

Buuut, the first edition is a mess so far. There are errors in both long- and shorthand, the exercises sometimes use bits of theory that hasn't been introduced yet, and sometimes not, even though they would make the shorthand a lot more efficient, and they sometimes don't even explain those bits (like the SH symbol in 'she'). Plus there are some divergences from the NCTJ "standard" that don't seem necessary.

I'll see if it gets better later. But if you'd like to learn Teeline, definitely go with NCTJ's "Teeline Gold Standard for Journalists"

#Accounting, #SlideRules, #penmanship, #shorthand, #typing, #telegraphy, and #carpentry were taught to school children in Burma, well into the 1980s. I think it would be socially beneficial to teach these skills to young American kids, today.

Basic accounting and personal finance are useful skills for adults, and indispensable for college kids wielding credit cards.

The slide rule endows the student with a keener understanding of various functions and, more importantly, always to check one's results, mentally.

Being able to write in a beautiful, cursive script with a fountain pen may now be but a party trick, but it still is an important social skill.

Shorthand offers a massive advantage in note taking. Given that every child learns to type social media posts well before they first learn to speak, proper typing technique should be taught to children, for efficiency, for preventing repetitive stress injuries, etc.

Telegraphy is valuable in aviation: VOR and NDB navigation aids transmit their identifiers in Morse code. And Morse code is still a thing in the amateur radio scene.

Teaching kids basic carpentry, like making a rough table, is of limited utility, but they will never forget that experience of making something out of raw materials.

Above all, these old skills are cool, at least in some circles. And if nothing else, these activities will surely keep them off social media.

I live in Oregon's Portland metro. I love punk rock and 80s new wave music. I'm almost knowledgeable enough with Linux to be annoying. And I can hyperfixate over old shorthand textbooks like you wouldn't believe.

I struggle with anxiety, depression, sensory processing, depersonalization, and the typical difficulties of navigating life while being neurodivegent. I believe talking about mental health shouldn't be stigmatized.

Got bored and spent an hour tidying. It was satisfying to throw empty boxes down the stairs. Jasper and Sapphy investigated under a chair cos I cleared some space, but they didn’t find much. I kept a berry-red wig for a Black Butler cosplay I planned a decade ago, but removed other bags of stuff.

Idk where we’re gonna find homes for #stenography #shorthand #dictation #CassetteTapes, though amazingly I find some are still sold. Lots of #Pitman books too, but we’re keeping those.
