  1. Trillium line extension over a year overdue, two phases of testing done but still no date on line opening.

  2. As a bilingual Canadian, I'm really annoyed at how poorly "VIA Rail" gets pronounced in French. Like on the #OttawaLRT announcements. How come VIA picked some non-bilingual friendly name back in 1970? Even just "VIA" would be better.

  3. @JasonThorne versus #OttawaLRT third world structure. And even that is insulting to 3rd world capability. Also pics of the beautiful Montréal metro system, built in 1967.

  4. Mixed #OttawaLRT experiences today:

Con: the system that shows departure times is down (though the trains are still running regularly every 5m).

Pro: I had forgotten about an early work meeting, so I joined the video call on my phone at Tunney's Pasture (with earbuds, mostly listening), and mobile internet worked, hickup-free, for the whole ride to Parliament (including the downtown tunnel) and then up the elevator to street level. (!!!)

  5. Not only has the #JimWatsonLegacy left Ottawa with a completely f*cked up public transport system including #OttawaLRT but it made sure that whatever little public transport remained is completely, totally, constantly unreliable. And all those responsible for this #EgregiousNeglectOfDuty have walked off into the sunset, completely free from any accountability. #Postmedia #CdnMedia oh look, belly lint

  6. Happy 4th anniversary to the #Ottawa LRT! Remember when it used to smell like shit and broke down constantly and had to go offline for days or weeks at a time with no notice and couldn't handle winter and couldn't handle summer and only ran from Outer Downtown to Inner Downtown?

What a time that was and also continues to be! #OttawaLRT

  7. "The point here, though, isn’t to re-litigate what went wrong with Ottawa’s LRT. Rather, it’s to understand how we might move forward and find a stronger thread to tie the buttons back on, on this project and future ones."

  8. Just back from a 4km walk that crosses the PhaseII #OttawaLRT route, where they've progressed to receiving the rails for installation.

Are these the US variant and are they really going to go ahead with them now that they appear to be incompatible with the European wheels?

Can we slap a return-to-sender sticker on these?

  9. Who would've thought that the #OttawaLRT would be so adversely affected by that rain event today!?

I'd have thought that system was pretty impervious to all perils! Guess it's not as bulletproof as we'd all come to believe.

  10. Ask me no questions and I will tell you no lies #ottawa #OttawaLRT

  11. @Pkbwood oh man. We haven't managed a fire on our #OttawaLRT yet, but I'll check later today and see if they have managed a triple-failure of wheel-bearing, rails and fires yet. First two are in place currently.

  12. Great seeing the enthusiasm and pics of the #Montreal #REM trains on their inaugural day of operations! I hope for good things!

Missing in the news coverage I've heard so far though is any mention that those trains are very similar to Ottawa's, and ours are shut down now for weeks for bearing issues (and suddenly track work too).

Also, I heard that Alstom needs to "design new bearings' to remedy the situation.

What do the Montreal REM wheels use, one might ask?

  13. Sadly it's not a final fix for picking the wrong vehicle (no winter stats, low floor, too few doors/too easily crowded and jammed), cutting 2 downtown stations from the final plan (& cutting entrances to the surviving stations), running the tunnel too shallow and opening up a bunch of sinkholes, and all while keeping the service one of the most expensive in the country.

But at least (maybe) it'll be running again (until the next breakdown) soonish #Ottawa #OttawaLRT

  14. At least two of these three consortia include companies involved in the #OttawaLRT fiasco. So this will go well. Why in God’s name isn’t #VIA running this? railwaygazette.com/infrastruct

  15. Just hearing a news report that they are now investigating whether "passenger weight" might be the cause of the wheel-bearing problems on our new #OttawaLRT trains.

I'm waiting for the gleeful announcement of "problem solved" as they put weigh scales at the stations, and ask passengers to weigh in before boarding the train.

Maybe they can have a flashing "TILT" sign for a retro pinball vibe when the train is overloaded.

  16. As our 'brand new' #OttawaLRT goes into extended shutdown yet again, the same crazy question always remains:

Did long-time manufacturer of trains #Alstom design a train from scratch without using experienced staff who knew of their previous models?

You'd swear they'd never before known trainy things, like wheels, bearings, doors, pantographs.

They seem to have worked without the benefit of thousands of existing in-service examples that have worked fine for decades. Weird.

  17. Gotta love the #OttawaLRT This morning eh? 5 trains immobilized because of a power issue, more than likely because of the freezing rain. Did not learn a damn thing from January. They should think about de-icing agents similar to what is used for airplanes or something along those lines. #ottawacity #LRTPRoblems
  18. What stupid #ottawalrt shit is this at Hurdman? A tree that was neglected?
