I really wish projects like OVMS would get more attention, maybe funding and support, etc. I would love to have a full OVMS implementation for my car, to the point that I could locate and remove the SIM card for Kia's connected services.
For the things that do function, OVMS has been way more reliable and trustworthy.

Being able to log information about how my car is functioning is pretty valuable.
I can see that it's being way more active in managing the 12v battery since the VCU update, and it's doing so at the proper voltage. I would say this is a really good thing, and a massive change from prior behavior that allowed the battery to just...die.

Took a drive and confirmed that the charging system does keep the recombination voltage during the drive.
So that basically confirms my feeling that the previous behavior was a flaw.
I might still need a new battery though because it might have some damage. It passed Kia’s test, but it definitely doesn’t have anywhere close to the capacity it should. As of now, battery maintenance looks more aggressive so it should be fine until then.

With #OVMS back in place, I'm observing an undocumented change with the VCU update: The car might finally be sending an appropriate charge to the accessory battery in drive mode. Previously, it was only sending around 13.2v, and only supplying the 14.8v needed for recombination during charging sessions.
So they may not have only updated the brake light behavior.
I need to drive a bit to confirm though.

OVMS is reinstalled.
If you're curious why I removed it temporarily, it's to avoid the dealership being dicks. It's illegal for them to claim it voids the warranty, but it wouldn't stop them trying. And I just don't have the spoons to fight it.

I should reinstall my OVMS module in my car now that the annual service is done…

It seems like OVMS development has stalled. I’m a bit worried about this.

The difference in user experience between OVMS and Kia Access/Connect is stark in terms of remote information. As OVMS improves, it'll be nice to start gaining more functionality, eventually passing Kia Connect. And it's probably more affordable in the long term, even with the $250 kit you have to buy and install.
As of now, support for the latest Kia cars is a bit lacking. I'm working on learning the code, myself, so I can become a contributor.
