September is almost over and we didn’t post #OpenHistoricalMap statistics for August yet! Since the start of August, we added 3.9 million dated elements, more than doubling what we had before. That includes 1.6 million more buildings and 17,192¼ more railroad miles than we had before.

#OpenHistoricalMap is more than a map. As an #opendata project, it aims to help people discover and understand the wealth of information that mappers have contributed, whether or not it fits on the main rendered map. In this #SOTMUS2026 talk, learn about OHM's analysis tools, what you can do with them, and the shortcomings the project wants to address with community help.

The Eastern Turnpike operated between the areas of Albany, NY, and Williamstown, MA, from 1799 into the late 19th century. A private toll road, it was typical of the period, and there were many such roads in upstate NY. Sources discussed in this #SOTMUS2026 talk include NYS lidar data, highway department records, old topo maps, and NYS State Archive records.

Oops! #OpenHistoricalMap was supposed to be a map of history, but then the linguists found us and turned us into an accidental map of the history of writing. @mxn shows how we and @maplibre are bringing #HGIS to more language traditions all over the world:

Ran a fun Palestine Open Maps mapathon yesterday with Yara Sa'di-Ibraheem. She's researching communications infrastructure in Palestine during the British colonial era, so we extracted the telecom infrastructure in the historical maps using the Tasking Manager, based on Yara's paper: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.polgeo.2024.103242

We got a lot of work done! Blue squares are the ones that have been worked on. There's a long way to go, but good progress.
