Recently I'm seeing folks in #OpenEducation who want to public domain-wash some specific material by passing it though the gastrointestinal tract of an LLM.
While IAmNotALawyer, I don't think this works.
And friends, keeping in mind the wonderful Audre Lorde quote that James G-G and Joy Shoemate cited in their #OpenEd24 keynote
"The master's tools will never dismantle the master's house"
... do we really want to go down that path? -

We believe no one should have to curb their efforts to create a more equitable educational experience for their students due to costs associated with creating, editing, hosting, and adapting #OER. We provide access to over 1 million pages of #open content, completely free. We offer instructor accounts for educators, also completely free.
Want to feel like you're part of a community of #OER advocates and practitioners that is unrivaled in the #OpenEd space? We have that, too.

After the mid-morning break at #OpenEd24, I am now attending "Open Education at a Crossroads" from the fabulous Catherine Cronin and Laura Czerniewicz! "The purpose of the session is to enable globally diverse conversations about the future of open education."

In preparing for this event, Taryn worked with her students on the development of the Ready Bags, and started conversations with them about earthquakes and disaster preparedness. This became not just a support project, but also a teaching and learning experience! #OpenEd24
-
So at PCC, they wanted to share our disaster preparedness kits (ready bags) along with information and resources about how to deal with earthquakes when they occur. How did they do it, though? #OpenEd24
-
Next up at #OpenEd24, I am attending "The Intersection of OER & Community Engagement: Increasing Equity Through the PCC Ready Bag Project" opened24.sched.com/event/1gu3H/

Huge props to Anita for providing so much context, information, and care in this talk in a short timeframe! It was easy to follow and fun to take notes on! #OpenEd24
-
Anita follows this discussion of rights reversion with how she supports it in her context. Doing this requires building in new information (a new intro, updated metadata, new layout or design, a new cover, accessibility updates, etc). And of course, openly licensing the new output! #OpenEd24

And specifically, discussing how to navigate the topic of rights reversion for published works! This is an especially confusing topic, even for those of us who might be familiar with the publishing world or copyright generally. #OpenEd24

If you are at the final day of the Open Education Conference, please reply to this post or make your own post tagged #OpenEd24 and--at some point today-- ask someone if they're interested in joining Mastodon or BlueSky. Let's bring our people into spaces where we can talk *after* the conference, too!

This is CogDogBlogged: "There Lies Hope"
A lot of presentation slides just slide on by. They just keep flowing. Next slide. Next presentation. Next gushing about AI solving… oops, not this post.
Yet, every other once in a while, you hear a talk, indeed the kind that a person speaks, not just reads, that well shatters your status quo.
That was my day as a virtual attendee of the 2024 Open Education Conference where I understand […]

I gave a presentation at OpenEd24 in Providence, RI today. It was called "Against Hope." You can access the slide deck and a practice recording of the talk on my website here: https://robinderosa.net/higher-ed/against-hope-opened24/

If anyone else, like me, was Deeply disappointed in the Day 2 keynote at #OpenEd24, please check out this amazing refutation of all that crap from Robin DeRosa @actualham : https://bit.ly/AGAINSTHOPE

Day 2 of #OpenEd24 is here and Benny would like to remind everyone that #LibreTexts consortium, the #LibreNet, is a growing community of #open practitioners and advocates using our greater #LibreVerse of #OER and open technologies to further open education initiatives on their campuses. And as we approach everything we do with a mission over money mindset the #LibreNet is priced for sustainability, not profit.

Now at #OpenEd24, *one of* the most out of touch discussions about AI I could expect here, though not the worst! From a keynote, it is disappointing. Given the climate disasters we are seeing week by week, how can anyone preach Generative AI as some savior for equity on a global scale?
-
The old band getting back together at #OpenEd24. With @karencang
-
Now at #OpenEd24, "Chattering Openly: Talking about Open Access in an Increasingly Fragmented Social Media Landscape" with Larissa Babak from Michigan State! https://opened24.sched.com/event/1gu5S/
-
At the end of the course, students work on team projects co-authoring new materials that intentionally include open and inclusive elements, which are peer reviewed and "audited" by other student teams. #OpenEd24
-
Three themes came through in these interviews: 1. Students had a wide range of experiences, from very positive to very negative. Some students had difficulty engaging in a less hierarchical classroom setup. #OpenEd24

I’m in the fantastic Embracing a Spirit of Sharing at #opened24
They bring up the idea of taking the Little Lending Library idea and running with it.
I’d love to do something like this for my area of expertise. What does a lending library loook like for unused DIGITAL tools? is that legal? is it useful?
Maybe its sharing server space / compute, or time / technical expertise?
Something I need to think about more.
