  16. Charles Nolte (1923–2010) was a U.S. stage & film actor, director, playwright, and educator. His portrayal of the title role in the 1951 Broadway production of Billy Budd received critical acclaim. He wrote libretti for two Argento operas: The Voyage of Edgar Allan Poe and The Dream of Valentino.

  19. The widowed Maria Poe Clemm (1790-1871) was Edgar Allan Poe's aunt as she and Poe’s biological father, David Poe, Jr, were siblings. After Poe’s marriage to her daughter, Virginia Eliza Clemm, she became Poe’s mother-in-law. Maria Clemm outlived them both, dying in poverty in a Baltimore charity home.

Frances Keeling Valentine Allan & her husband, merchant John Allan, fostered Poe as a family member, tho Mr. Allan & Poe often disagreed over Poe’s poor money management, gambling debts, & inability to fulfill commitments. Frances, a maternal figure in Poe’s life for 17 years, died in Feb 1829 when Poe was 20.

  21. After Edgar Allan Poe’s discharge from the U.S. Army in 1829, he stayed with his aunt, Maria Clemm, in Baltimore. There, Poe and his first cousin, Virginia Eliza Clemm, became close. In 1835—at age 26—Poe obtained a license to marry Virginia. She was 13. They were married until her death in 1847.

  22. Rufus Wilmot Griswold (🖊️name: Ludwig) influenced the perception of Edgar Allan Poe’s life & works, esp. posthumously. The men’s relationship began professionally but devolved given work-related jealousies & competition for the same romantic partner (see: Frances Sargent Osgood ☕️). Griswold wrote Poe’s obituary under his pseudonym & claimed he was Poe’s literary executor (#drama).
