  1. My #oceanography colleague Denise Fernandez is voyage leader in the Cook Islands region mapping ocean temperatures.

She was my co-voyage leader on Tangaroa last year when we went to literally the coldest part of the oceans in the outflow of the Ross Ice Shelf - and now she's taken Kaharoa II to measure El Nino ocean temperatures.

This is epic stuff and rather unheard-of for one person to lead voyages to both extremes in such a short space of time. And jeepers that ocean is warm. #climate #ocean #oceanheatcontent #climateemergency

  3. Ocean heat content (Earth 🌍)

Ocean heat content or ocean heat uptake is the energy absorbed and stored by oceans. It is an important indicator of global warming. Ocean heat content is calculated by measuring ocean temperature at many different locations and depths, and integrating the areal density of a change in enthalpic energy over an ocean basin or entire o...

  4. #Ocean surface temperatures around #Aotearoa #NewZealand - it's getting hot. This shows departure from normal for the time of year. The central Tasman is particularly so - and this drives some of our weather systems.

(keep in mind this is just the very surface of the ocean - we have less data, but some, on what's going on deeper down)

  7. serious ocean warming study from colleagues down the corridor,

a fancy journal like Geophysical Research Letters doesn't publish stuff that happens in a sleepy South Pacific ocean backwater unless its a big deal.

    _5_ times global average. 😲

"The warming has placed this biologically-significant region in almost perpetual #MarineHeatWave conditions."

Yet the prognosis for the future of this type of science in NZ is very not good.

Yes its the biggest existential question for our civilization at the moment. Sea surface temperatures are easy for everyone to understand but the real story is Ocean Heat Content - the Joules of energy stored in the ocean. Typically the total over 700m or 2000m is what is tracked.

  11. last views of the #RossIceShelf - now we head along the catchily named Edward VII Land coast towards Cape Colbeck. In search of meltwater coming around from the hot glaciers further east of here. #climate #OceanHeatContent

  13. In which I take a different angle on the old chestnut "we know more about the surface of Mars than we do about the oceans". In this case #Venus.

It seems like a plea for more money but actually its a plea to not reduce the modest efforts to monitor the Planet's flywheel. If we don't tell this story we are sleepwalking into a shit-show.

  15. wrote a thing for theConvo - they wouldn't go for my original title "Its the oceans, stupid" but did allow half of a "shark on the back deck of a trawler" analogy (the cut bit was why would you haul more sharks onto the back deck). Its getting really hard to say things in a measured tone and expect things to change. #ClimateChange #OceanHeatContent theconversation.com/record-low

  17. I got asked at a workshop a few weeks back what keeps me awake at night... it is this.. mindful that it is ocean _surface_ temperatures -the ticking you hear is the role of #mixing and how much heat can actually be "stored" #Climate #OceanHeatContent theguardian.com/environment/20

  19. when headlines talk about "scorcher" like it's gonna be a fun day at the beach. 😐 its very not-good. This for 3jan23 - ocean surface temperature anomaly (ie difference from normal) red=hot... from Ben Noll at #NIWA using #NOAA product. #MarineHeatWaves #Climate #OceanHeatContent
