  1. A reminder that there will be a #Nishio style #aikido seminar in #Jyväskylä at the #Aikiken dojo, 26th–28th Sep. It will be lead by #Iwakata sensei, 6th dan, a good and very approachable teacher (also studied under #Endo for a while). Nishio style aikido is fluid, fast and practical, with strikes (atemi) regularly practised. Weapons play an extensive role and at least half of the seminar will consist of them, also including Nishio Ryu #iaido / #AikiTohoIai.

  2. Is there anyone who does #iaido or #koryu #kenjutsu who would recognise the chiburi from this kata (#AikiToho by #aikido sensei #Nishio)?

I’m not sure how well the hive mind on Mastodon will work but I’ve been looking for the answer for some time. Some charts list it as a chiburi from #SuioRyu while others don’t. High ranking people from Suio Ryu didn’t recognise it. A practitioner of Aiki Toho stated error in table. But I haven’t been able to link to any other school.

  3. I think a lot about how the #sai would really be the perfect #aikido weapon. While they can be lethal, they are blunt weapons and thus not primarily for killing. They defend against longer and bladed weapons, so need to utilise and evade their power. Sai can also be used to lock up weapons and opponents and (I imagine), throw them.

I have rarely seen it used in the art. Though I have played with some things. E.g. an application of ikkyo (also influenced by the #Nishio iai kata).
