We did some sumo today! My teacher read that O Sensei's students were regularly training sumo at the dojo, so he is trying to make this a custom here too.
We only did that for a couple of minutes.
We were avoiding the initial dangerous shock, so we were starting with each other's belt grabbed with both hands, and at the signal trying to push them outside of a tatami square.
I really enjoyed it!! -
Next weekend we will have an #aikido seminar led by our very own Tom Granström (6th dan), starting at 1pm on Saturday in #Rajamäki. There will be weapons practise at 4pm and we will head out for dinner in the evening. Practise continues Sunday at 11.
This will be at the Taekwondo club, Kievarintie 14. Everyone is welcome!

We did something unusual in aikido today: chaining eight techniques without ukemi, morphing morphing the end of a technique into the start of another. It was a nice exercise to work without sweating too much (because of the summer heat), and also to work on the uke work.
The chain was: ikkyo omote, into shiho nage omote, into nikkyo ura, into kote gaeshi, into sankyo ura, into irimi nage, into koshi nage, into kaiten nage

#Aikido is the martial art most commonly associated with the phrase “using the attacker’s force against them.”

Yamashima-sensei, 8th dan in #aikido, and well over 80, is in Finland this week and we have the pleasure of hosting him at our dojo in #Rajamäki on Thursday at 18:00. He is the most approachable 8th dan we have experienced, and takes his practise sincerely but with a smile. Despite his age he still travels and teaches constantly, and will be leading practise every day this week. He says he still learns new things about aikido every day. Jukara in Vantaa will be hosting a seminar with him over the weekend.
I hope some of you can make it over! All belt grades welcome. -

July Recap: Martial Arts, Mats and Mountains.
Besides our regular twice-weekly Aikido practice (and of course we went horse riding as well) this July my daughter and I found ourselves visiting other dojos near us, meeting old friends and making new ones.
The month began with an invitation to a Saturday morning weapons class at a friend’s dojo. They practice in a school and their outdoor training area (which is the school’s football pitch) comes with a rather spectacular backdrop: the panoramic view stretches across the Salzach River to Burghausen Castle in Bavaria. Burghausen Castle is a massive medieval fortress. With a length of more than 1050 metres, it is apparently the longest castle complex in the world. We wanted to visit it after practice, but had to change plans, it was a busy day. Another time, hopefully.
Aikido weapons practice with a view! The Salzach River marks the border between Austria and Germany. The castle lies on a long hill above the town of Burghausen. This was in between heatwaves, so outdoor practice was actually quite nice. Forgot sunscreen though. Faces got a bit burnt 🤦🏼♀️A few days later, we visited another dojo in our area for an evening seminar. This one doesn’t offer a castle view, but it makes up for it with beautiful architecture. It was designed by a Japanese architect and built by the local government 20 years ago, together with some sports clubs. It is used by local and regional Martial Arts Clubs: Judo, Karate, Aikido, Jiu Jitsu – and more.
Short but intensive evening seminar in a beautiful dojo that radiates peace. The following weekend brought something completely different. Some members of our Aikido club also practise Iaido, and one of them invited us to his home for an afternoon of Tameshigiri (practising sword cutting skills on straw mats, using traditional Japanese swords) The mats are tightly rolled, tied, and soaked in water for 24 hours to achieve the right density. However, this isn’t about destroying something. It’s about precision, focus, responsible and respectful handling of weapons – and perfect technique. I was the one with the camera, so I don’t have photos of myself in action, at least no good ones 😉
Our audience consisted of two horses, the neighbours and the local cats. The highlight of the month was our annual summer seminar near Innsbruck last week: a full week of Aikido with four to five hours of training every day, bringing together participants and teachers from Austria, France and Germany. As always, it was inspiring, challenging, and a wonderful opportunity to train with so many different people.
There was only one small complication. We are in the middle of another heatwave. Temperatures are around 40°C, and unsurprisingly Austrian sports halls and dojos are not equipped with air conditioning. We trained, sweated, drank endless amounts of water and electrolytes and then trained some more. It was exhausting, but deeply rewarding.
However, I can’t even begin to describe how much self-discipline it takes me to spend five hours a day training in a sports hall when the weather outside is perfect for hiking and the mountains are right there outside the window, impossible to ignore. I resisted the temptation almost every day. Almost. Only one day I couldn’t resist the call of the mountains any longer, skipped training and went hiking instead. I did two summits and had an absolutely wonderful day, probably the best one since last summer. As I spent the day at an altitude of 2000 – 2600 metres above sea level, I was also able to escape the heat as an added bonus 😊
High above the city of InnsbruckSome months don’t need a single highlight. Sometimes they become memorable simply because they are filled with the things you love.

Tonight we saw three different forms to get out of kosa dori (also known as ai hanmi katate dori). One form more natural to do ikkyo, one form more natural to do shiho nage, and one form more natural to do kote gaeshi. Then we tried them all on irimi nage.
It helped me to clear some confusion, because I had already seen these three forms but never in the same session, so that helped understanding their differences and similarities. -

Danach kleine Feier. -
I bought a new jo, with a larger diameter because that's what we use at my dojo. My first aiki-jo looks frail in comparison, but I think this is just an optical illusion because their diameters are not so different (8 bu and 9 bu).
However the new one is comparatively much heavier, obviously because of the square law. But I think it is even a bit heavier than the jos at the dojo. Perhaps because it is fresher wood?
