July Recap: Martial Arts, Mats and Mountains.
Besides our regular twice-weekly Aikido practice (and of course we went horse riding as well) this July my daughter and I found ourselves visiting other dojos near us, meeting old friends and making new ones.
The month began with an invitation to a Saturday morning weapons class at a friend’s dojo. They practice in a school and their outdoor training area (which is the school’s football pitch) comes with a rather spectacular backdrop: the panoramic view stretches across the Salzach River to Burghausen Castle in Bavaria. Burghausen Castle is a massive medieval fortress. With a length of more than 1050 metres, it is apparently the longest castle complex in the world. We wanted to visit it after practice, but had to change plans, it was a busy day. Another time, hopefully.
Aikido weapons practice with a view! The Salzach River marks the border between Austria and Germany. The castle lies on a long hill above the town of Burghausen. This was in between heatwaves, so outdoor practice was actually quite nice. Forgot sunscreen though. Faces got a bit burnt 🤦🏼♀️A few days later, we visited another dojo in our area for an evening seminar. This one doesn’t offer a castle view, but it makes up for it with beautiful architecture. It was designed by a Japanese architect and built by the local government 20 years ago, together with some sports clubs. It is used by local and regional Martial Arts Clubs: Judo, Karate, Aikido, Jiu Jitsu – and more.
Short but intensive evening seminar in a beautiful dojo that radiates peace. The following weekend brought something completely different. Some members of our Aikido club also practise Iaido, and one of them invited us to his home for an afternoon of Tameshigiri (practising sword cutting skills on straw mats, using traditional Japanese swords) The mats are tightly rolled, tied, and soaked in water for 24 hours to achieve the right density. However, this isn’t about destroying something. It’s about precision, focus, responsible and respectful handling of weapons – and perfect technique. I was the one with the camera, so I don’t have photos of myself in action, at least no good ones 😉
Our audience consisted of two horses, the neighbours and the local cats. The highlight of the month was our annual summer seminar near Innsbruck last week: a full week of Aikido with four to five hours of training every day, bringing together participants and teachers from Austria, France and Germany. As always, it was inspiring, challenging, and a wonderful opportunity to train with so many different people.
There was only one small complication. We are in the middle of another heatwave. Temperatures are around 40°C, and unsurprisingly Austrian sports halls and dojos are not equipped with air conditioning. We trained, sweated, drank endless amounts of water and electrolytes and then trained some more. It was exhausting, but deeply rewarding.
However, I can’t even begin to describe how much self-discipline it takes me to spend five hours a day training in a sports hall when the weather outside is perfect for hiking and the mountains are right there outside the window, impossible to ignore. I resisted the temptation almost every day. Almost. Only one day I couldn’t resist the call of the mountains any longer, skipped training and went hiking instead. I did two summits and had an absolutely wonderful day, probably the best one since last summer. As I spent the day at an altitude of 2000 – 2600 metres above sea level, I was also able to escape the heat as an added bonus 😊
High above the city of InnsbruckSome months don’t need a single highlight. Sometimes they become memorable simply because they are filled with the things you love.

Turns out that it's very handy knowing an iaido master around this time of year😋...
#スイカの日 #watermelonday #スイカ #watermelon #Japan #Kyoto #京都 #居合道 #Iaido
Cultivated for at least 5000 years (they are depicted in Egyptian hieroglyphics), watermelons are 92% water!🍉

One news that has been doing the rounds in ZNKR #iaido circles is that there apparently is a plan to remove the use of the sageo (the ribbon that connects the sheath to the belt). Would be very sad if that happens. It’s part of the tradition and for me an essential part of the attire (despite also causing many frustrations!).

Oh nein ich hab noch meine halbe Pizza im Kühlschrank auf der Arbeit gelassen 😭😭😭
Was für ein start ins Wochenende 😞
Aber dafür gibt's heute statt #Kendo was neues #iaido 🤗

Great news! #JussiEkholm has been invited to an afternoon of Japanese #swords in Helsinki, 29th Mar, 4pm. He is a well known collector of swords and is visible on international forums. This will not be about practise, but about learning the beauty and crafts behind the #katana.
A must for anyone into #iaido, #kenjutsu or even #aikido. I will definitely be there, so hope to meet some of you then. At the #Nishi dojo.

On 25.2 there will be a chance to learn some basics about Nishio Ryu #iaido / Aiki Toho. I’ll be leading a practise at the Nishi dojo in Helsinki (the name of the dojo is a coincidence). For anyone doing #aikido and would be keen to connect their practise with the sword and Iai, or those doing sword stuff and interested in Nishio’s unique approach. It is quite beautiful and fun.
Please let me know! Would love to see some more people. No cost.

People there will be complete beginners so do come round if you are at all in the region :)

#introduction
Hello! I am Originalbarbas and I have recently joined this server. I am a physicist, currently researching #quantum technologies in #Vigo. I build things with lasers on them, basically. Sometimes I also build the lasers too. I have lived in many places, recently in #Scotland and #Catalunya.
I like #videgames (currently playing through Expedition 33), #tabletopgames, #ttrpgs, #manga, #anime, #books (I read everything that I get my hands into, but I specially like #scifi, #fantasy and #murdermysteries), #comics (european mostly, but also american and basically every genre I can find), #bouldering and recently #aikido and #iaido.
Pleased to be in your nice company!
P.S. I might write another in Spanish, maybe tomorrow. -

I caught a bit of an itch to practise some mild tameshigiri to assist with my #iaido. Cardboard rolls, maybe the odd tatami. I really want to spend a minimal amount and for some katana that is close enough to my iaito (so not something wide and heavy specific to tameshigiri).
Looked at a couple Ten Ryu jobs being sold locally at #Teräasekeskus. And then there’s #Yarinohanzo. Any views? Or other cheap suggestions?
