And yes, people on other instances can see your posts if they follow you.
They can also see what you post when you use hashtags, e.g., #newheretoo, #mastodonmigration.
Likes and boosts are indeed cumulative.
Make use of hashtags--you will have more responses since more people will read what you have to say.

Could this be due to the influx of accounts since #Musk man apparently has lost his mind?
It only takes a few seconds to write a descriptive text for pictures, gifs, and other images.
Mastodon is the first platform where I've encountered such a request.
This should be a matter of practice. #newheretoo

From the tips being posted say, sharing and searching hashtags is the way. And the ability to follow hashtags like people is in the works?
I get what you're saying about the algorithms showing you new and interesting things. I like that too. But this model is more us contributing and showing each other new stuff than The Algorithm deciding what we see.

If you are on a general-interest server (like I am), when you see someone interesting who is on a more special-interest server, go check out that server and those people. -

Looks like you are using an app? Many have found the apps to be somewhat lacking. Try using the website directly, it's easier and more featured. I'm on an Android device using Firefox (go #OpenSource !) and this is what my screen looks like. The search thingy you are looking for is the hashtag third from the top.

What do you mean when you say it doesn't recognize your instance? The intance is your home server. Are you using the Tusky app? Try using the Mastodon site (not an app). I'm also using an Adroid device, with Firefox browser, and it is much better than the apps I've tried. It is kinda confusing to start

#NewHereToo The easiest way to find people is to check who all the people you follow also follow. The button on the site that looks like 3 people standing together is for your local server. It seems like right now all us newbies are just following anyone and everyone to make connections. Like being at a networking event and handing out your business card to everyone! There are also some sites that give directions on how to find your twitter people here

Same! It took less time to get used to Mastodon than to get used to twitter.

It's available on the website, but not yet for iOS or Android apps.For #Android users in general, the app is lacking, just use the website. (I know that's not you, just spreading the word to other #NewHereToo peeps)
