This morning, I read an article in the newspaper which must appear weird to anynone who's interested in the topic.
It started like: "For a long time, the messenger service Signal was considered a secure alternative to WhatsApp by many consumers. However, following the phishing attacks on the platform targeting high-ranking politicians, the question now arises as to how secure the service really is. Those wishing to use alternatives should inform themselves beforehand."
The article then goes on to list and explain Threema, Wire, and Telegram.
This demonstrates the editor's absolute incompetence. Telegram as an "alternative" to Signal, seriously? When we look what happened to some members of the German Bundestag, we see a targeted phishing attack where the attackers claimed to be the Signal support, pretending to require an access code to "verify" the account. And as was only to be expected, several people – including the President of the Bundestag – fell for it.
Now, the President of the German Bundestag (yes, the President who fell for the phishing attack) recommends using Wire instead of Signal.
But changing the tool doesn't solve the problem which is mostly sitting in front of the computer or smartphone. It's not Signal's fault, it's the user.
To claim Signal is insecure is as absurd as blaming a locksmith for a break-in where the homeowner left the key under the welcome mat for the burglars to find.
It seems to me that this entire affair is being weaponized to smear Signal's reputation.
@signalapp I hope you have strategies how to fight this.
