Denmark. After fifteen years behind bars for a bank robbery, the surly loner Anker (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) steps back into freedom with just one desire: to dig up the loot he once had safely stashed away. It lies buried in a spot only his brother Manfred (Mads Mikkelsen) knows the way to — but Manfred is no longer the man he left behind. Marked by a dissociative disorder, he is convinced he is John Lennon, and along with the man he once was went any memory of the hiding place. To recover the money, Anker has to find a way to unlock his brother’s mind, and together the two end up on a quest as absurd as it is moving — in search of the loot and of who they really are. Director Anders Thomas Jensen shapes his pitch-black comedy about brotherhood, identity and the frayed edges of ‘normal’ into a striking showcase for Mads Mikkelsen, and it premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

New York, today. In the strip clubs of Brighton Beach works the quick-witted, tough-as-nails Ani (Mikey Madison), a young sex worker who fends for herself and lets no one intimidate her, until the charming, obscenely rich Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn) whirls into her life. The spoiled son of a Russian oligarch showers her with luxury and promises, and in a haze of infatuation and recklessness the two marry on impulse in Las Vegas. But when the news reaches Russia, Vanya’s parents send their henchmen after the young couple to have the marriage annulled, and Ani’s fairy tale turns into a wild, riotously funny chase through the streets of New York. Director Sean Baker shapes his modern anti-Cinderella into a raw, energetic screwball comedy about class, love and money, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and was later crowned with five Oscars, including Best Picture.

Naples, 1950. In the swell off the coast, Parthenope (Celeste Dalla Porta) is born, a girl of an almost unearthly beauty who will grow into an enigma to everyone who crosses her path. As the years pass and she is shamelessly desired and adored, Parthenope wrestles with the burden of her own enchantment: her appearance opens every door, yet constantly threatens to overshadow her sharp mind and her longing for real freedom. Through a series of encounters, losses and temptations, she searches for who she truly is beyond the gaze of others. Director Paolo Sorrentino sculpts his lush, sensuous coming-of-age (an ode to his native city and to the transience of youth) into a dreamlike vision that competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Outdoor cinema Amsterdam: The Mastermind (2025) at Pllek (Amsterdam Noord, NDSM-Wharf)
Massachusetts, 1970. As America is torn apart by the war in Vietnam, unemployed carpenter and family man JB Mooney (Josh O’Connor) drifts somewhat aimlessly through his days, restlessly longing for something to make his small existence feel bigger. One day he takes a step as reckless as it is inscrutable: together with a handful of accomplices, he walks into a local museum in broad daylight and makes off with four paintings. But what seemed like a masterfully plotted heist turns out to be a trap of his own making — holding onto the loot proves harder than stealing it, and gradually Mooney’s life, and that of everyone around him, unravels further and further. Director Kelly Reichardt shapes her story, partly inspired by real-life art thefts, into a restrained, dryly comic anti-thriller steeped in period detail, which competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Mexico City, the 1950s. American expat William Lee (Daniel Craig) drifts through his days in a haze of drink, cigarettes and fleeting encounters, longing deep down beneath his eloquent exterior for a real, mutual connection. That connection suddenly appears in the form of Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), a young, reserved former soldier who draws Lee towards him like a magnet, yet remains elusive and keeps him guessing about what he himself desires. As the fascination grows into an all-consuming obsession, the two men travel deeper into South America together, in search of a legendary drug that holds the promise of total union.

What starts as well-intentioned relationship therapy quickly turns into a wild roller coaster of jealousy, desire and painfully honest conversations, where friendship and love become hopelessly entangled.
