My experience so far with the NameDrop-style pass sharing in the Wallet app on iOS 17.2, where you bring phones together to share a pass:
0% success rate 👎
It does the nice animation on both devices and the button to share the pass is displayed, but after tapping the button it just closes as though it completed it, except the other device waits forever and never receives the pass. A manual AirDrop works. So close, Apple, so close.

📢 In the latest episode of the @sharedsecurity Podcast, we address the rumors circulating around the new iOS 17 NameDrop feature.
We discuss the misconceptions, debunk misinformation, and provide insights into how Apple's intention to enhance user experience is often misunderstood.
As someone who uses both a work and personal phone, I encountered the NameDrop feature firsthand and decided to disable it for convenience and NOT for privacy reasons. It's crucial to critically analyze information and separate the facts from the noise, even when its posted by law enforcement!
Join me in this informative discussion by tuning in to the full episode!

iOS 17.2 NameDrop allows you to "quickly share boarding passes, movie tickets, and other Wallet app passes with another iPhone user."
Love this. Useful when traveling with a group/family and you bought all the tix.

I feel bad for all the developers at #Apple who worked on #NameDrop and the near field sharing stuff — since all these people are just shutting it off with all the misinformation and fear-mongering going on.
Telling people the truth in every case has resulted in the reply "well I'm just going to keep it off anyway”.

This whole #NameDrop debacle is exactly the sort of thing I had in mind when I said Apple needs to work on its reputation. They have coasted on a generally good public opinion, but they are allowing that to get corroded — and that positive opinion is hard to regain once lost. https://www.macworld.com/article/2155780/local-police-departments-namedrop-warning-parents.html #iOS #iPhone

iOS 17 NameDrop #privacy scare: What you need to know
Long story short, this is being blown out of proportion... the phone doesn't just give away your contact information when in range. It asks if you want to share your contact details or just receive the other person's.
If someone takes your phone to do this, then that's a much different problem but doesn't stem from NameDrop itself.
NameDrop is fine.

After posts went viral via Facebook about the supposed privacy threat posed by iOS 17's NameDrop feature, 9to5Mac clears up any confusion by explaining exactly how it works and how you can disable it if you wish to.
-
While police departments and news sites are asking users to turn off NameDrop in iOS 17, there is no real risk of someone stealing your contact information without your consent.

"Chester Wisniewski, a digital security specialist at Sophos, called the warnings about NameDrop 'hysteria' and 'nonsense.'
"So you shouldn't worry about #NameDrop. But you should worry that police and news organizations are failing you by sounding false alarms about technology."

On the iOS 17 NameDrop "scare headlines"...
The more I dig in, the more I think there's something to this:
- It's on by default. Apple should turn it off by default
- Declining a request is confusing. There's no obvious "cancel" button
NameDrop is a nice feature, just needs a bit of tweaking.

No, You Don’t Need to Turn Off Apple’s NameDrop Feature in iOS 17
Yes, your iPhone automatically turns on NameDrop with the latest software update. But you shouldn’t really be worried about it
Across the US, police departments are warning to turn off the contact-sharing feature on iPhones and children’s devices. Also a TikTok video, with over 2 million views, describes how the feature lets strangers steal your information. The catch? It’s not true

NameDrop requires devices to be unlocked to work, which means it's a safe feature that some random person can't activate without your knowledge. If they steal your phone and can get past the lock screen, NameDrop is the least of your concerns.
Don't disable this feature because some idiot on Facebook or a technically incompetent police department social media manager made a viral post.

@Mek101
Yes, "We pay to XYZ" is dangerous language. Its a kin to "We gotta do something against this very supposed bad, crazy leader".Words matter. Its why we couldn't boost this post and originally only liked it.
"Many pay to XYZ" would've been better, but we still don't like to #namedrop #dotCons in what we put out.
We prefer terms like #CAGEFAM. That is #GAFAM + CloudFlrae + that phony who cause a stir trying to buy #Turdsite recently.
