🌕HOW A RABBIT CAME TO BE ON THE MOON🖌️
The Heian period "Konjaku Monogatarishū" includes an ancient Buddhist tale, explaining how Taishakuten (帝釈天 'Commander of the 4 Heavenly Kings', often shown as the 'Old Man of the Moon') came to draw the image of a rabbit on the moon.

Nao-san was quite skeptical when I mentioned the "Man in the Moon", so here's a rough idea of what he looks like... ...I'm not sure it's strengthened my case🤔
From far away it looks a lot more like a face, honestly!😅

Because 'Moon Viewing' (月見) is celebrated at this time of year, images of rabbits pop up everywhere.
The idea of a Moon Rabbit was imported from China. A story in the 'Songs of Chu' (楚辞) first mentions a toad and rabbit on the moon pounding herbs for the immortals.

Another older rabbit print, I made this linocut as part of my Chinese zodiac series. I wanted the rabbit to appear bathed in moonlight to allude to the myth of the moon rabbit, companion of Chang’e the moon goddess, continually pounding the elixir of life with mortar and pestle.

An old man came by begging.
The monkey collected fruit from the trees and the fox stole rice from a storehouse. But the rabbit only had grass to offer.
Rabbit, instead, asked the old man to build a fire. When it was ready he offered his body for food by jumping into the fire, but miraculously the flames did not hurt him.
Moved by the rabbit's pure heart, the old man revealed himself to be Taishakuten (帝釈天). -

🎑THE MOON RABBIT🐇
In many Western countries people see a "Man in the Moon" (often considered "god of drunks"), but in Japan folk see the image of a rabbit pounding rice cakes in a mortar.
China's rabbit is crushing laurel leaves to create an immortality potion.#Japan #rabbit #folklore #moon #maninthemoon #moonrabbit #兎 #月見

Selenite in color. I didn't feel like doing the ink work as this was a test for colors. might change it later for redraw with a new color palette.
