At its (very brief) peak, a #MobileCoin was worth $68.

They are now worth only 8¢

You can't use MobileCoin to donate to Signal, despite it still being baked in to @signalapp.

FWIW, I think it is sensible for apps to experiment with weird new fads. No one knows what will become useful, and it builds institutional knowledge.

But I think it is probably time to gracefully retire this feature.

@jwildeboer I would have loved to use #MobileCoin to be honest and actually bought some of the coins early on. I did so in part because I trusted the project, because Signal trusted it. Now I have definitely lost trust in MOB and it continues to challenge my trust in Signal, even though I respect the company in so many other ways. I wish they would just make a public announcement on Mobilecoin and let its followers understand what's going on with it.

GOOD: #Signal switches to usernames and finally gives up on their insistence of sharing your mobile phone number.

BAD: #Signal keeps its #cryptocurrency wallet for #MobileCoin in their app that nobody wants or needs.

Was #mobilecoin a scam? I don't regret to have bought some, but am a bit disappointed to have been fooled by something backed by #signal which I otherwise have immensely high trust in. @signalapp

Look, I still think Signal is a great app, but this "beta" is absolute nonsense.

Two years ago, #Signal tried launching #MobileCoin in the UK.
The feature is still in beta.
I wonder who made money from that launch spike - because it looks like a successful pump-and-dump.

The private messenger Signal has the cryptocurrency MobileCoin integrated into it. But you can't donate to Signal with MobileCoin.

All of these obscure crypto-currencies are get-rich-quick scams by techbros. The point is to give the techbros money, not actually use the currency for anything useful.

Definitely an "eat your own dog food" type of situation. The fact that they don't accept it should tell you that you shouldn't use it.
