Once the risk of severe weather diminishes, we plan to continue direct attack to gain more containment in the coming days. This area will continue to be monitored by aircraft and, if needed, aircraft will make water drops to cool down any hot spots that flare up.Resources: 12 crews, 18 engines, 22 heavy equipment, 5 helicopters
Fire Weather & Behavior:
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecasted today. Persistent cloudy conditions are anticipated and will help moderate temperatures and relative humidities. Thunderstorms may bring wetting rains, but these rains will be spotty. These storms will also bring the potential for outflow winds which may affect a broader area than the rain itself. Any outflow winds bring the possibility of increased fire behavior. Critically dry fuel moisture continues across the region which support the potential for active fire behavior and rapid spread. -

Aug 15 at 11:36 AM EDTDaily Update August 15, 2025 from Turner Gulch Fire Colorado:
Containment rose to 75% today due to the great, ongoing work firefighters accomplished in the Cow Creek area over the last few days. A successful burnout operation in this area proved invaluable in stopping the spread of the fire. Crews continue to mop up and secure this section of fire line, ensuring that all heat in close proximity to the line is fully extinguished. Mopping up is when firefighters meticulously search for heat sources near the line. They look for sources of heat, often using the back of their bare hands to detect this heat in burnt out stump holes and other large fuels that may still be holding embers. Any heat that is detected is extinguished with hand tools, often with the aid of water from nearby engines.
The western edge of the fire continues to show little to no growth. This area has not grown for several days but is not yet considered contained. Scattered heat remains and is the focus of our efforts here. A crew was inserted yesterday to go direct on this section of the fire, and they got a lot of good work done. However, there is more work yet to accomplish. Due to potentially dangerous weather conditions forecasted, the use of these crews in this particular area is temporarily paused for the day.

Aug 9 at 12:26 PM EDTRed Flag conditions persisted yesterday and will continue today, creating significant challenges for ground crews. As the fire continues moving into the previously burned area of the 2023 Cow Creek prescribed fire, work continued to improve existing containment features using hand crews and heavy equipment. Line is expected to be completed along the 405 road today. Structure protection prep work is continuing and sprinklers have been placed in a few locations. Firefighters are patrolling and monitoring the Highway 141 corridor and are prepared to respond as needed.
Niche Road is still closed due to unsafe conditions; fire managers are establishing a camp near Gateway to allow faster response time than is available from the Turner Fire Operations Base. Dangerous firefighting conditions still exist along the western edge of the fire near private property; firefighters have reengaged and will continue to respond as conditions allow. Along the eastern perimeter, crews remain focused on patrol, secure lines, and suppression repair, extinguishing occasional hot spots and maintaining the Divide Road for safe and operational access. Containment lines remain secure and continue to be patrolled along the northern perimeter of the fire. Nightshift crews are continuing to monitor the fire and are available to respond should they be required.

08/07/2025 Update from Northern Rockies Incident Management Team 2, Incident Commander – Scott Schuster:Red Flag conditions persisted yesterday and will be ongoing in the foreseeable future, creating significant challenges for ground crews. In the southern perimeter, road preparation along 416.1A trail was completed, and dozers connected it to the 608 trail, which was widened and cleared of brush to improve access. The fire is moving into the previously burned area of the 2023 Cow Creek prescribed fire with crews improving and maintaining the line along the 608 trail. Aerial bucket drops were used on the southwest corner to cool hot spots and maintain line security. The contingency group continues to scout potential line locations between the fire and the community of Gateway in case they are needed, aiming to avoid sensitive areas. Structure protection prep work is now underway after several days of planning.
Access to the southwest perimeter via the Niche Road is closed due to unsafe conditions, so fire managers plan to establish a remote camp at the opposite end of the trail to allow quicker firefighter access than from the Turner Fire Operations Base.

Red Flag Conditions Increase Fire Activity on Turner Gulch – August 6, 2025The Turner Gulch Fire is experiencing very active behavior under Red Flag conditions through at least Friday. Strong southwest winds, very low humidity, and dry fuels are causing the fire to spread quickly and unpredictably, with fast runs, torching trees, and sending embers ahead of the fire front.
These conditions make it too dangerous to fight the fire up close, as fast flames, flying embers, and rough terrain can quickly block escape routes. Crews are instead using indirect tactics--building lines at a distance, utilizing natural barriers, structure protection where feasible, and relying on aerial support for safer options.
This video shows the southern perimeter of the Turner Gulch Fire during active fire yesterday. With conditions too dangerous for crews to work up close, helicopters used buckets and snorkels to drop water on hot spots and edges, slowing the spread and supporting ground crews. With weather conditions expected to persist, active fire behavior is likely to continue overnight. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/19o6q7f2Sr/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Crews are also placing line where the fire is backing downslope in the southwestern corner, working toward Road 405 and the Ute Creek drainage. Structure protection planning continues with contingency groups assessing values at risk and identifying line placement opportunities between the fire’s edge and the Gateway community, and for the structures in the southeast corner of the fire.On the northern and eastern flanks, where firelines are holding, patrol and suppression repair continue. Crews are also maintaining Forest Road 403 and other routes to ensure safe access for fire operations and future public use. Meanwhile, in support of efforts across the fire area, air resources remain active and are evaluating opportunities to use retardant to slow fire progression.
Fire Weather & Behavior: Slightly improved humidity recovery won’t slow fire activity. Fire behavior will increase where wind and slope align, with potential for active spread in all fuel types. Complex terrain may channel winds unpredictably, and medium-range spotting is possible. Expect rapidly changing conditions.

Containment: 49%
Personnel: 395Fire activity remained very active yesterday and throughout the night, particularly in the Snowshoe Trail area near the southern edge and along the southwestern perimeters. Persistent Red Flag conditions fueled extreme fire behavior and heavy smoke, complicating suppression efforts. Fire managers initially planned direct suppression tactics in these areas; however, after aerial and ground assessment, conditions were deemed too dangerous for crews. Instead, firefighters were moved to prep the Niche Road off Highway 141 as an indirect containment line. Heavy equipment working in the eastern perimeter was shifted from repair work to support suppression efforts in the southeast flank. Additional engines and aerial resources have been ordered to strengthen suppression operations.
Fire activity along the southern perimeter is expected to remain elevated today, with Red Flag conditions likely to continue through the end of the week. In the southeastern corner, where the fire’s edge remains unsecured, crews made steady progress and anticipate spending another half to full day extinguishing hot spots and securing the line. Fireline construction is ongoing, including work to improve Road 416 and connect it to the 608 trail.

Aug 5 at 12:16 PM EDTRed Flag conditions yesterday led to increased fire activity and heavier smoke impacts in surrounding communities. Crews were positioned on the west flank with plans to go direct along the fire’s western edge, moving southward. However, as fire behavior became more active late in the morning, crews shifted focus to defend structures on private property. Aerial resources also assisted structure protection efforts, helping to slow the fire’s spread toward a threatened cabin.
Today, aircraft will continue to assist ground crews and conduct reconnaissance as conditions permit. Fire managers are actively evaluating options to secure threatened structures and identifying opportunities for additional line construction extending toward the southeast. As conditions evolve, suppression tactics will be adjusted accordingly to ensure firefighter and public safety. A contingency plan is in place in the event fire activity progresses, where crews can no longer safely access or build direct fireline along the southern perimeter.
On the northern perimeter, firefighters continue to hold and patrol the fireline along Highway 141, extending down the eastern flank to the edge of a 2023 prescribed burn. Some heat was detected and extinguished along the east edge, and crews will continue monitoring and addressing any remaining hotspots.

2/2Members of the Northern Rockies Type 2 Incident Management Team (CIMT) began arriving at the fire yesterday and were briefed by the current fire managers. They will shadow the current staff today and take command of the fire at the end of the shift this evening.
Weather & Fire Behavior: A red flag warning is in effect until 7 p.m. and is expected to return tomorrow. The longer-range forecast calls for more hot and dry weather. In the afternoon, gusty and erratic winds can continue to be expected, reaching gusts of up to 20 mph.

Aug 3 at 12:51 EDTCurrent Situation: Today, on the western perimeter of the fire, crews will assess opportunities for line construction south of the private land holding near the fire perimeter and identify new helispot locations to facilitate the movement of personnel and equipment, thereby enhancing fireline progress. Several Hotshot crews were deployed south of Forest Road 416 to work southwestward, constructing fireline from the city communications tower toward the Ute Creek drainage. Air support is assisting them as they seek to halt the westward and southward progression of the fire.
In the northern perimeter, firefighters will continue to patrol and suppress any remaining hotspots as necessary. A contingency group has been established to evaluate structures in the Cow Creek area and to look for opportunities to build indirect fireline between the fire and the Highway 141 corridor.
Suppression, repair, and backhaul of supplies and equipment are ongoing on the eastern perimeter. In the southern perimeter, crews are working to improve Forest Road 414 down to FS 404, which will be used as a contingency fireline.

Weather and Fire Behavior:
Fire behavior has intensified with the arrival of warm, dry air from the southwest. This airmass has also carried smoke from fires in the region. These conditions are forecasted to persist through early next week, and fire managers are cognizant of the potential for near-critical or critical fire weather over the weekend. Strategy and tactics have been matched to the opportunities presented by the fuel and weather as conditions have changed.
