MatAre – Brevity
If you paid attention to the global dream pop scene in recent years, then you probably know there are many artists who deliver quality pieces of work almost anually, keeping the scene dynamic and interesting as much as possible. But what if I told you there are artists who release their music almost quarterly without losing consistency and quality? MatAre is one of those music outlets who continiously delivers some of the finest works the dream pop scene has ever witnessed. So far, everything I’ve heard from this incredible artist is worth revisiting over and over again. His music carries a tremendous emotional depth delivered through his calm, ethereal voice and almost poetic lyricism. Not to mention the instrumentations that always sound like you’ve been transported into a completely different realm. That’s the case with “Brevity,” his latest extended play release consisting of four marvelous compositions, all worth placing at the top of the playlist. Aesthetically, MatAre has picked a straightforward dream pop sound for this one. Known for his experimentations with various genres, he decided to craft a perfect dream pop extended play where all four song carry that calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal, otherworldy sound that defines some of the finest dream pop recordings. Lyrically, MatAre is a storytelling master, and his music often carries certain emotion, rarely heard or seen in other artists. Whether he’s describing particular scenery, situation, or a circumstance, or navigating various sentiments and moods, his lyrics always feel honest and emotional. Although he picked dream pop as a primary style on this extended play, you’ll still notice how some different yet complementary music genres found their way into this sonic equation. You’ll stumble upon shoegaze, post-punk, alternative, and indie along the way, implemented more or less, depending on the current mood and feel of the song. MatAre perfectly assembled, all four songs, so you’ll still get a portion of all those mentioned styles while he simultaneously remains loyal to the primary sonic direction. It’s a treat for your ears that you shouldn’t miss.
This epic sonic journey commences with a title track, a perfect composition that not only vividly showcases MatAre’s current sonic direction but also his songwriting, composing, arranging, and producing abilities. He fully stacked this fine piece of sonic artistry with many guitar layers, crafted and recorded to perfection. All those chord progressions, harmonies, and themes articulate together flawlessly while the generous servings of reverb, echo, and delay bring that cave-like, colossal sound. The song continues with much calmer arpeggiated chord progressions during the verses, while the reverby, warm-sounding, intricate basslines are more upfront, offering more than necessary low-end. In the meantime, the energetic rhythmic patterns keep everything in line and dictate energetic pace, making this track so memorable. Of course, MatAre’s beautiful vocal performance shines in the limelight, offering guidance for listeners from start to finish. Such a brilliant introductory piece. With “When Alone,” MatAre leans even more into dream pop territory, with all those subtle, mellow, tender chord progressions perfectly suiting his calm, ethereal voice. You’ll also notice how vividly hearable synth works bring more chord progressions, pads, leads, and other sonic maneuvers, adding more depth and detail to an already profoundly detailed song. The interplay between guitar and synth works is mostly notable during the end, when those arpeggiated chord progressions collide with synth pads. MatAre is a master in crafting songs like these, where all those otherworldly layers merge together without overwhelming each other. These are the moments where his arranging and producing abilities truly shine. “Do You Think They’ll Talk About Us?” exemplifies how shoegaze music should sound in 2026. It’s one of those songs where reverb, echo, and delay suppress generous servings of distortion beautifully, offering a nearly cinematic ambient that immediately wraps around your listening apparatus. The carefully, thoughtfully, and wisely crafted low-end notes contribute more warmth, depth, and clarity to those guitar works, helping out all the instrumentation in arriving as a singular, colossal wall of well-articulated sound. MatAre also incorporated subtle synth works for more depth, while the half-step beats, breaks, accentuations, and other rhythmic acrobatics perfectly keep everything precise and organized. And this ear-appealing journey comes to an end with “When The Sun Falls,” a song with such a catchy, memorable, engaging chorus that immediately forces you to spin this material all over again. MatAre’s voice is even more melodic here, accentuating all those guitar themes to the max, while the additional, reverby guitar works contribute even more ethereal soundscapes. The rhythm section is slightly faster than usual, making this track not only anthemic but also danceable and more cheerful. This track will immediately throw you back into the eighties, an era when new wave and post punk ruled the airwaves, but still, MatAre kept this track in the dream pop lane as much as possible. Such a perfect closure of an incredible extended play release.
“Brevity” not only stands out from anything you could possibly hear on a dream pop scene nowadays, but it also vividly demonstrates MatAre’s incredible talent, creativity, experience, and knowledge. Through beautiful vocal harmonies, lush guitar, and synth works and rhythm section that brings groove, depth, and pace, this material shines with many brilliant ideas and outstanding musicianship that not so many artists and bands can create, recreate, or mimic. With “Brevity,” MatAre proves once again that he’s a torchbearer of the contemporary dream pop scene, and this extended play release will be right up your alley if you’re looking for a emotionaly profound music performed with tremendous precision and finesse.

Interview: MatAre
Photo courtesy of the artist.Today, I’m joined by the talented MatAre for an inside look at his latest creative journey. We dive deep into his atmospheric new single, “Into The Sea,” exploring the inspiration that sparked the track and the intricate songwriting and composing process behind its unique sound. Enjoy!
Listen to “Into The Sea” – HERE
Hello, thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. How have you been?
MatAre: I have been great. I’m going through an explosion of creativity lately. I am really excited to do this interview and tell you about my upcoming music and plans. I think this may be the first time I have explained my upcoming musical timeline I have planned, so you get an exclusive!
Congratulations on the upcoming release of “Into The Sea”! What was the spark or initial idea that inspired you to write this specific song?
MatAre: I was thinking about the beach and how the waves break on shore over and over and in a specific pattern. So, I imagined a song where the melody was simple and repetitive but really epic and matter of fact and reliable.https://youtu.be/SlsywDQ3xyo?si=rtNpXg71Qlfi-AbM
The title is very evocative. Can you elaborate on the core theme and narrative you’re exploring in the lyrics? Is it purely about the literal ocean, or does the sea serve as a metaphor?
MatAre: This song is literally about the sea, the beach more specifically. If you follow me on social media, you must have seen at some point that I spend a lot of time at the beach exercising, skimboarding, which is a sport where you sprint, throw a board down and then ride it into the waves to do tricks or just go sliding fast and far. The song is about how this exercise and ritual helps ground my mind when I am pummeled with stuff trying to trigger anxiety. You collaborated with Turkish producer Surfgreenvibes on this track. How did this collaboration come about, and what did he specifically bring to the production that helped shape the final sound of “Into The Sea”?
MatAre: Surfgreenvibes and I work together on tracks every so often. My second single, Dream About You, was an earlier song he helped produce and I really like his knowledge of music from the period of time I am tapping into. I sent him the demo of the song which laid everything out as far as the main riff, chords and vocal part.Could you walk us through the songwriting or composing process for this track? Did you start with the melody, lyrics, or the overall mood?
MatAre: I just came off producing Extinction Burst for the last year and a half and the idea of having someone to collaborate with and do the heavy lifting for a little bit felt awesome. I got to take what he started with and then add the fun stuff like more guitar textures on top, a breakdown section and then all the finished vocals of course. It was a fun way to work and the break I needed at the time.Has anything significantly changed in your creative process, whether in songwriting, recording, or production, compared to your earlier material?
MatAre: Yes. Every period of creative output, say an album, or an EP, I try to change the way I make music. With my first album, I literally sat down with my acoustic guitar and wrote every song out so that I could sing and play it before I ever touched my computer. For Extinction Burst, I wrote everything during production as well as tried faster tempos, harder and more aggressive sounds. For the upcoming music I will tell you about, I am not writing anything new. I have collected all of my demos from the last few years and am focusing on them for future music. The song reflects your profound connection to the beach and its calming influence. How critical is location or environment to your musical creativity?
MatAre: It is a major part of it, when I was in the remote part of North Dakota, I was inspired by the silence of the snow and the feeling of isolation. When I was near LA, I got to be part of the Inland Empire excitement, and that energy influenced me greatly. I would say this part of my life and its effect on my songwriting is a major part of my identity as an artist.Compared to your previous recordings, in what specific ways does this song represent a shift or development from your previous releases?
MatAre: I feel like each period of my music that I enter, I get better and better at this whether that means clearer recording or more mature songwriting or better more technical guitar riffs. I think it also means catchier yet more simple music. Into the Sea represents this best I think.Your music always has a nostalgic touch combined with modern sensibilities. Which favorite artists or bands do you feel most directly inspired the sound or mood?
MatAre: That’s hard to say because sometimes I literally model my music after a specific song, but this one doesn’t really have that inspiration. It’s just a mish mash of all the music I like and wanted to sound like.“Into The Sea” is set to be followed by a five-song EP that delves into dark wave, goth, and post-punk sound. Did you write this composition knowing it would be the lead single for this specific collection, and how does it introduce the overall sound of the forthcoming material?
MatAre: So, I have altered my plan a little bit and I am excited to say that this first EP will be the first one out of 7 planned. They will be laid out like chapters in a book, or episodes of a show and they will be made of all of my demos of songs written and into a kind of artist character arc for MatAre. It turned out to tell a really great story that I think my fans will identify with. So, Into The Sea will be from the first Chapter 1 which is a 3 song EP. It’s an expansive plan and covers 22 songs. But I am at a place that I feel like I can technically pull this off with everything that I’ve learned about music and promotion up to now. I love challenges like this, and it excites me.Could you share a quick story or an interesting behind-the-scenes detail from the creation or recording of “Into The Sea” that might surprise your listeners?
MatAre: My songs always have double meanings, one literal and one deeper that pertains to me. Into The Sea also is about aging and giving in to the process but also hope. “Every wave reminds me of what I still can be…”For new listeners, what message or emotional takeaway do you hope they experience when they first listen to your latest song?
MatAre: I hope new listeners from different countries and different ages and nationalities can enjoy this music all the same.Given your blend of genres, is there a particular instrument or sonic element on “Into The Sea” that you feel is the most essential anchor for building such a lush atmosphere?
MatAre: The guitars, layers and layers of effects makes it sound perfect to me. They almost sound like strings from an orchestra they are layered so thickly.Looking ahead, what are your plans for the future after the EP release? Do you have plans for touring, creating music videos, or collaborating with more artists?
MatAre: I am planning on collaborating with more session musicians and opening up my network of artists. I am planning on a song collab with a producer in Miami, Forida that I want to announce when we get further along into the project. That’s it. Thank you so much for your time. Is there anything you would like to say to our readers at the end of this interview?
MatAre: Thank you, Thoughts Words Action has always been so supportive of my music and I really appreciate you taking the time to help me reach the audience of your blog and network.#GOTH #INDIE #INDIEROCK #INTERVIEWS #MATARE #MUSIC #NEWWAVE #POSTPUNK #SYNTH

Photo courtesy of the band.MatAre is one of those music artists who always deliver high-quality music to the table. In the vast sea of contemporary artists, his releases somehow always stand out, with each new song sounding even more detailed, fascinating, otherworldly, and worth revisiting over and over again. Whether leaning more calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal soundscapes or energetic, danceable, and complex hits, his music showcases tremendous dedication to the craft and years of experience, combined tastefully, expertly, and with such precision and finesse. “Epilogue,” his latest standalone single released on October 2nd, embraces the best of both worlds. On one side, there are lush, detailed, and beautiful soundscapes that wrap around the listening apparatus and refuse to let go, while on the other, there are those energetic beats that force you to dance from start to finish. MatAre knows what works best for his tunes, and he does that with so much heart and soul that you’ll notice how “Epilogue” pours sincere emotion through every vocal harmony, sonic, and rhythmic maneuver. For those stumbling upon this brilliant artist for the first time, MatAre explores several complementary music genres, vividly illustrating the luxuriant sonic imagery. Darkwave truly shines in this sonic equation, mainly because all those fundamental elements of this genre dominate the most during each segment, yet there are also some of the finest properties borrowed from synthwave, new wave, and post-punk rumbling around, making “Epilogue” an even more fascinating piece. MatAre knows how to incorporate all these additional sonic ingredients without spoiling the initial sonic direction. All these enhancements, accents, decorations, and other details are here solely to emphasize particular segments, while “Epilogue” remains dedicated to the calm, soothing, ethereal darkwave atmosphere. You’ll hear how this marvelous track carries qualities that meet all the trends of modern music production, but there is also a subtle touch of nostalgia that immediately transports you into the eighties, an era when darkwave, synthwave, and new wave ruled the airwaves. MatAre brings that era while infusing a modern sound that will appeal not only to the fans of these longstanding music genres but also to anyone who appreciates cleverly assembled and flawlessly performed music.
Photo courtesy of the band.As soon as you press play, you’ll notice how the expertly composed interplays between synths and guitars shape a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. There are catchy, memorable, engaging, hypnotic, addictive, and irresistible leads, themes, melodies, harmonies, and pads, while the other side resonates with reverby chord progressions that further contribute to that dreamy, soothing soundscape. It’s nearly mindblowing how all these layers articulate without spoiling each other, proving that MatAre not only thought about the melody, harmony, groove, and dynamics, but also about the overall ambiance. These lush orchestrations also serve as a perfect backdrop for MatAre’s vocal performance, a significant part in this sonic equation that uplifts everything to new heights, commands attention, and guides listeners through every segment. MatAre keeps these vocal harmonies as calm as possible, leaning more towards baritone and bass notes, infusing goth rock and post-punk vibes into the darkwave, synthwave, and new wave songs. These vocal techniques seamlessly handle low, mid, and high notes, delivered through instrumentation. Besides decorating every segment and orchestrations, his voice also contributes more than necessary emotional depth and complexity to an already intricate song structure. Of course, the rhythm section brings dynamics, groove, and even more detail. You’ll hear how MatAre incorporated some of the finest, perfectly recorded, and composed basslines, contributing more heaviness, clarity, and depth to this composition. These rich, deep, dense, and heavy low-ends definitely bring more warmth and groove while simultaneously binding synths, guitars, and rhythm patterns together. And there’s a comprehensive collection of perfectly programmed, well-accentuated, energetic beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics lurking around, keeping all the orchestrations in line. Everything has its place and purpose here, making “Epilogue” such a pleasant listening experience.
MatAre never ceases to amaze, and with “Epilogue,” he pushed his music even further. His profound love for synth and post-punk music is vividly hearable in each vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuver, but what he truly managed to do with this composition is to push the boundaries of these longstanding music genres, demonstrating that they can still sound fresh, unique, and innovative. MatAre always delivers masterpieces, but “Epilogue” sets the bar even higher. Therefore, you should immediately place this composition on your music radar. The single is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
