Some more featured creatures from last Friday's visit to the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside, NY. Short summer, this one. Soon, the species shown here will will be migrating, although some Clapper Rails stick around all winter.

Today was a Saltmarsh Sparrow kind of day at the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside, NY. I was very happy to see that these endangered birds produced many surviving offspring this summer.
On this occasion, maybe four or five Salties (adults and juvies) were playing hard to get, flushed out of some Phragmites along the path every time someone walked by, diving into the Spartina further in, and then returning within a short time, but never perching. Then this adult and a friend came quite close, perching tranquilly on this concrete ledge for a few minutes.

Now, these are really interesting: Horned Screamers with their chicks. The only thing that currently looks "screamer-ish" about the chicks is the downward tilt on their beaks; otherwise, they're little yellow bundles of floof just like ducks and geese, to whom they are related. But look at what wonderful plumage, eye color, and sheer size they have to grow into! 🖤 🤍 🧡
That horn, by the way, is not a feather. Instead, it's a spiny growth that breaks at the tip and regrows throughout the bird's life.

The Clapper Rail is built to negotiate the mud and dense marsh vegetation it inhabits, with its long legs, big feet and laterally compressed body. And, together with other Rails, the young have vestigial claws on their wings, which also help them move through the vegetation, making them true "dino birds."
