    Ein Film, der sich bis heute jeder einfachen Einordnung entzieht. Kein unpolitisches Kriegsabenteuer, keine historische Rekonstruktion, sondern eine minutiöse Studie über Stolz, Pflicht und die Absurdität militärischer Logik. Schon in der ersten Szene, in der britische Soldaten in ein japanisches Kriegsgefangenenlager geführt werden, ist die doppelte Dimension zu spüren: eine strenge Ordnung, subtile Machtmechanismen, die Menschen zerstören können. Anders als in klassischen Flucht- oder Abenteuerfilmen wird die Brücke nicht zur Begründung der Handlung, sondern viel mehr zum Symbol der Unterwerfung unter Systeme, die nicht kontrollierbar sind. He commented on Malcolm's talent for writing opera in the Italian style and for understanding how to have groups of people singing different things at different times but still all be heard. #malcomarnold did study for a while in Italy after winning the Mendelssohn scholarship in 1948
