Some mind-blowing, and stunning work in a new pre-print! 👀👀👀👀
If you go to a dark enough sky, you will, with your eyes, notice two bright clouds in the southern sky. These are the Magellanic Clouds (Large and Small) and they are the closest galaxies to our Milky Way (our Galaxy is trying to eat them up). They are only 160,000 - 200,000 light years from us.
The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) has been a bit of a mystery in that astronomers have debated its shape.
Now, a new study - using Australia's radio interferometer ASKAP - has taken a real close look at the SMC, and found it might actually be not one - BUT TWO galactic systems lying along the line of sight.
Huge!

The Magellanic Clouds must be renamed, astronomers say
Ferdinand Magellan, who murdered and enslaved indigenous people, was not an astronomer nor the clouds' discoverer.

"#Astronomers Need to Rename the #MagellanicClouds" an opinion piece by Mia de los ReyesI'm in favor because that name is there solely to glorify somebody from a perspective of a flawed set of values. Directly quoting: "Names reflect community values. Naming objects, buildings, and places after people has long been a way for society to honor individuals for their discoveries, their accomplishments, or the values they symbolize. Magellan made no #astronomical discoveries, and for many, he continues to be a symbol of imperialist and anti-Indigenous violence."
I see the complication of old texts becoming obsolete and I would be completely comfortable telling newcomers that e.g. "Yes, it used to be named after a murderous #colonialist but we then realized it was a bad idea and the confusion that currently exists now serves as a reminder to care for one another."

You certainly don't get #skies quite like this here in the UK! This is me under the spectacular #starry skies above the #ESO #LaSilla #Observatory in #Chile. Above and to the right you can see the Large and Small #MagellanicClouds. These are relatively small galaxies that orbit our #MilkyWay #Galaxy. Literally galaxy moons!
