Jupiter and the Meteors from Gemini

Jupiter, the Solar System's ruling gas giant, is the brightest celestial beacon at the center of this composite night skyscape. The scene was constructed by selecting the 40 exposures containing meteors from about 500 exposures made on the nights of December 13 and 14, near peak activity for this year's annual Geminid meteor shower. With each selected exposure registered in the night sky above Alentejo, Portugal, planet Earth, it does look like the meteors are streaming away from Jupiter. But the apparent radiant of the Geminid meteors is actually closer to bright star Castor, in the shower's eponymous constellation Gemini. In this frame that's just a little above and left of the Solar System's most massive planet. Still, the parent body of Geminid meteors is known to be rocky, near-Earth asteroid 3200 Phaethon. And the orbit of Phaethon itself is influenced by the gravitational attraction exerted by massive Jupiter, in concert with planets of the inner Solar System.

Where are all of these meteors coming from? In terms of direction on the sky, the pointed answer is the constellation of Gemini. That is why the major meteor shower in December is known as the #Geminids -- because shower meteors all appear to come from a radiant toward Gemini.

We are already well behind the peak of the #Geminids - as expected - according to meteor radio echo data from around the world plotted in https://www5f.biglobe.ne.jp/~hro/Flash/2025/GEM/ (the solar longitudes of 261° and 262° correspond to December 13th at 3:17 and December 14th at 2:53 UTC, respectively).

It’s the best night of the year to watch a meteor shower. The Geminids reach their peak tomorrow so tonight should should be pretty good.
It’s too cloudy here in Ireland tonight but I did get out last night for about 20 minutes and saw quite a few. If you have clear skies, just look east. You’ll see Jupiter as the brightest thing in the sky, Gemini is just above it. All you need to do is look vaguely in that direction and let your eyes adjust.

I am pleased to report that we were able to see a few of the #Geminids producing short streaks in the sky! We were within the #Groningen city limits, but outside the city center. We stood by a canal from 10:00 PM to 10:30 PM and saw maybe one meteor every five minutes. Then some clouds scudded by, and we got chilly!

New England got a solid Geminid preview last night, but tonight’s snow may spoil the peak locally. If you’re under clear skies, you’re in luck. With only a thin crescent Moon, conditions are excellent for the year’s best meteor shower. The Geminids peak around 3 a.m. EST Dec. 14, radiating near Castor in Gemini, with up to 150 meteors per hour in perfect conditions.

Just after midnight, one of my kids suggested we try again and go outside to see some Geminid meteors. But the fog was thick.
We ended up driving up the Blauen, and up there, the sky was much better.
We saw a good bunch of meteors, including 2 pretty big ones. Success!

The moon will be about one-third full as one of the year’s last #meteor showers becomes most visible. It has been active since Dec. 4, and reaches its peak Saturday night into Sunday morning, or Dec. 13 to 14. It will then remain active until Dec. 17.
