  1. Just reading the final #LinuxFormat and it's REALLY weird.

The intro doesn't mention that it's the last issue. The "Join the Revolution" article about how they've been publishing for 25 years doesn't directly address that it's the last issue (there's just "Farewell" in the top-right of each page and "Will the last person to leave please please turn out the lights?").

They're kinda closing but kinda sidestepping it as well.

  2. Oh. I had no idea that #LinuxFormat was ending publication until I read the last issue! That’s sad.

  3. Magazine will cease to exist. In the past 25 years 329 editions where published.

I've read every issue during my Bachelor as we had this subscription at our library.

    I will greatly miss it.

  4. Kiintoisaa lukemista meille Linux-wanhuksille ja ehkä muillekin: Brittiläinen Linux Format -lehti on pannut kaikkien aikojen ensimmäisen numeronsa toukokuulta 2000 ilmaiseksi nettiin. linuxformat.com/files/pdfs/LXF

Arkistossa linuxformat.com/archives?listp on muutamia muitakin vanhoja numeroita luettavissa.

  6. Nooooo! They're closing Linux Format magazine 😞

I mean, sure, it had got a bit "hardware-y" recently with the mouse reviews and wifi reviews and stuff. But they'd just started a series of tutorials on security. And the computing history articles were interesting. And you didn't have to wade through all the shit on Reddit/Hacker News/people who think videos are a good way to communicate most stuff.

  7. The final issue of #linuxformat has been released. After 25 years the magazine is going out with a bang. Interviewing the old staff members, and looking back at old Linux distros (Corel Linux, I used that a long time ago. I've been with LXF since 2011 (writing the community page) and freelancing with them since 2013. The Raspberry Pi User section started with the Pi 2, and it carried on til the very end.

  8. On the one hand, I feel it's really important to download the #LinuxFormat PDFs that I get because I'm a subscriber.

On the other hand, I'm not entirely convinced that I've EVER gone back and looked at them 😐

  9. Looks like Linux Format magazine isn't on Mastodon (that I can find).

I possibly shouldn't be surprised by this, but their "AI" issue is an absolute mess.

Not only is there the breathless extolling of the wonders of LLMs (like it being able to answer questions - which it can't do consistently if you want correct answers), but I've just read the article on Firefox and they're suggesting setting up a VPN, and they say that the VPN encryption protects your privacy from the VPN provider as well, which is VERY EXPLICITLY DOES NOT!

They probably got an LLM to write half of the articles. Confidently but wrong 🙄

  10. Well, I couldn't splash out in the black Friday sales, but I did bag a #PiPicoW and a breakout board from #ThePiHut!

However, I would like to highlight that even without the bf discount, The PiHut was still cheaper than the same things being sold on Amazon and eBay!

Anyway, order placed... Later, while reading my techy magazine (Linux Format, issue 322), what do I find but a small python project for a Pi Pico W (and an LCD display). Clearly my buy was approved by the Universe ☺️

  11. Also found Tuba by @GeopJr in issue 317.

Not only that, but they say "Tuba is for the fediverse what Cawbird was for Twitter"!

(Not that I remember @cawbird ever getting a Hot Picks mention! 😁)

  12. Catching up on #LinuxFormat. Reading the Peter Zaitsev interview.

"[In] the US financial industry, there's a concept of fiduciary responsibility… There's nothing like that in software professional services… I would tell my team many times, one of the proudest moments is when you say to a customer “You probably shouldn't do what you're asking us to. We're not going to take your money because that's not the right decision for you”.”

  13. Catching up on some Linux Format reading and… WTF? Are they drinking the kool-aid? 😒

"Despite the clear advantage of having AI create carefully crafted code, its use in major projects has been problematic"

Maybe that's because it DOESN'T create carefully crafted code! 🙄

    I expected better from LXF.

  14. Since I've found LINUX MAGAZINE - @linuxmagazine - along with, obviously, LINUX FORMAT, I got hooked up a lot! Just got a latest issue of the Linux Magazine, again, it's terrific, half of the things I have no clue about (lol), which makes further researching and learning so much fun!
I'm gonna miss those mags in print once I move back home...

  15. The editor of #LinuxFormat missed an blatant open goal with the phrase "power consumption of #AI servers will total around 4.3GW in 2023". Why have a picture of a NVidia core, when they *should* have had Doc Brown from Back To The Future gasping at the amount of power needed to make the Delorient time travel (you know the one I mean, that was my first reaction)?

  16. Reading #LinuxFormat.

Someone asked about a distro where they seemed to have to install apps per-user (which they didn't expect). It's because it has a read-only root partition and app separation. Which is great.

But then the reply said "it's inefficient for space, but that's not a problem and most apps use far more space for user data".

My dude, have you SEEN LibreOffice? And VS Code? And Skype? I do not have half a gig of documents or source code or VOIP calls!

  17. Anyone that follows me subscribe to magazine in the UK?
