Woke up at 4:30am. Sat down to convert around 3.6TB of 4K Blackmagic raw video to 1080p resolution (with colour correction, audio enhanced, the works), uploaded the resulting 60GB to a cloud drive so that editors can start working. First coffee at 9am. Back to back calls until an hour ago and now finally relaxing a bit. #LifeAtRedHat is fun, but sometimes it is a bit much too ;)

Produced 18 pages of PDF with statistics on salary ranges and gender equality as part of being a member of the Works Council. The results are definitely worth discussing. It was a lot of work. Will now make a hot cocoa and catch up on missed sleep. #LifeAtRedHat

"Someone", that has never identified themselves, put out a video at the time of Larry Ellison, Oracle Big Boss, introducing Oracle Enterprise Linux at OpenWorld 2006, shortened to every time he said Red Hat. That video lives rent free in my head ever since ;) It's still available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6WCRA4kSKY but I attached the version that lives on my hard drive :)

Also available in our Red Hat Munich office: the modern version of the Unfakeable Linux sticker :) Back in 2006 Oracle announced the Red Hat Enterprise Linux based derivative called Oracle Enterprise Linux, with what they called the unbreakable kernel. Which led us at Red Hat to produce hundreds of t-shirts over night with „Unfakeable Linux“ the we put on and distributed the next day at Oracle‘s OpenWorld event :) I still have one of those original T-shirts..

It's been so long since I mailed a physical letter that I had to look up mailbox locations on OpenStreetMap for the village I moved to. Even with a cold, I made the trek today because it was for the Red Hat Germany Works Council election. Democracy is important, and every single vote counts. 🗳️

10 yrs in #RedHat today. Feel like I need to write something profound. I love my job not just because it involves #opensource and #community, but mostly because of the wonderful colleagues I work with & amazing managers I work for. I'm thankful for #LifeatRedHat. That's all I have to say about that.

Nominated our CTO for an internal point reward under the "Transparency" heading. I didn't feel that a question during an internal AMA was answered fully. Shared the email I sent him in the AMA Slack channel. He took the time to call me and discuss it further, and shared, from the heart, the difficult task that so many corporate leaders have of balancing the desire to be transparent while facing the dangers of information leaks and the vocal court of critical, internal opinion. #lifeatredhat

I will now work on Red Hat internals to get this backport become official and hopefully distributed to all Red Hat Enterprise Linux users as part of an upcoming regular update. You should be able to follow that process at https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-132338

So I shared my problems with Apple Time Machine backups not working with a Linux server running Samba. Turns out it was a known problem and needed a backport from a patch for Samba 4.23 to 4.22, which was added in 4.22.6, but my Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 version is 4.22.4. So. I got test RPMs with the backported patch in 4.22.4 for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 from my colleague @cryptomilk at Red Hat and — it works :) Yay! #LifeAtRedHat

It's been a few years since I last used `rpm -Uvh --force` to install some test packages straight from the Red Hat build system to hopefully be able to report back that the fix works. (UPDATE: It worked https://social.wildeboer.net/@jwildeboer/115646062725748375 ) It's one of the reasons I love working at Red Hat. Being able to identify a bug and the possible reason, talk to the developers who immediately get it, getting a fix to test and finally getting that fix published in the next round of official updates. #LifeAtRedHat

Pay gap analysis is hard, hard work. Sifting through thousands of lines of data, trying to identify reliable ways to make an argument and identify correct comparisons. Salary bands, levels, job descriptions — they all need to be accounted for. In case you thought being an elected member of the Works Council in a global company is easy (at least when you decide to take your responsibility serious).
