Sunda Flying Lemur Galeopterus... -
Hauntingly beautiful gliding #mammal, the Malayan #Colugo/ Sunda Flying #Lemur uses a cape-like skin membrane to slide 100’s of metres through the #rainforests of SE #Asia. Fight for them and #Boycottpalmoil 🌴🙊🤮🚜🔥❌ #Boycott4Wildlife @palmoildetectives https://palmoildetectives.com/2026/02/08/sunda-flying-lemur-galeopterus-variegatus/?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=Palm+Oil+Detectives&utm_campaign=publer

Detox Doodles!
These animals are from my 100-day journey to swap scrolling for sketching: https://www.joyousjoyness.com/pages/detox-doodles
This page is all about Ringtailed Lemurs! Their eyes are difficult to draw with their dark patches...

A low ranking male ringtail #lemur kept watch for raptors at the top of the tree.
I sat and enjoyed the troop's cooing and meowing call for half an hour, putting my camera away.
-
The ringtail #lemurs adopt this “zen” pose when warming in the sun
-
The ringtail #lemurs were still sluggish and huddled together in the tree. I scrambled up the steep slope to get a better look and they watched this big funny lemur from their perch
-
Our local guide came running back: The hira (as the local people call the ringtail #lemur) are coming down! I spotted a troop in a tree close to the river!
-
This little red-fronted brown #lemur female surprised us in camp, looking for fruit. They absolutely don’t feed the #lemurs but she was persistent, grunting her “stay away” warning the whole time. They said she hadn’t done this before! #Madagascar
-
New #ssh key #randomart creature - now it's just ordinary #lemur hanging from branch, without any unnatural/fantasy features. It's tail was obviously visible in terminal.

This red-fronted brown #lemur doesn’t have a red front so she’s a female! She was lonely so she follows a troop of ringtail lemurs, who have accepted her presence. She surprised all of us at Namaza, Geoparc Isalo, #Madagascar when she strolled out of the woods into camp this morning!
-
Many #lemur species are nocturnal, especially smaller ones like the Sportive Lemur. They spend the day in a cozy tree hole, but can be spotted during the day. Even though his eyes are open and he moves slightly he’s deep asleep!
This species is only found in the Zombitse Forest in #madagascar
-
Sifaka spend most of their time in the middle of the tree canopy but often come lower to feed. Still, we were lucky to see them on the ground. Even the local guides were surprised!
-
He was part of a group of four sifaka browsing the food selection together. Three came to the ground when they found some fallen fruit while the fourth kept watch. Sifaka are a large #lemur species closer to the Indri than the familiar ringtail.
-
Yesterday morning I was sitting with this new friend at Zombitse National Park in #Madagascar as he enjoyed some local fruit!
-
I was completely surrounded by the ringtail #lemur troop this morning! They filled the trees, following their dominant female leader. It should have been QUEEN Julianne in the Penguins movie!
Rongtails live in the south and west of #Madagascar, far from the Indri and diademed sifaka.

These women entrepreneurs provide lovely silk scarves using the cocoons of a wild moth species native to #Madagascar
They dye the silk with natural materials like beet and lock it with aloe and banana leaf.
All the work is done by hand in these houses in Ambalavao near the Anja #lemur reserve

This is a bamboo #lemur (Hapalemur griseus) and he’s even cuter in person if you can believe it! But despite his nickname “gentle lemur” he’s a grumpy little dude and does not want to snuggle with you. He’s also resistant to cyanide (it’s in his bamboo) and poops toothpicks!
-
Here are a few other diademed sifakas in this mother’s family group. They were all around us but seemed only modestly interested in us large primates on the forest floor… #madagascar #lemur
-
This beauty is a diademed sifaka (propithecus diadema), and she leads a troop of about eight individuals. She’s also a new mother - look closely and you’ll see a weeks-old infant clinging to her belly! I was lucky enough to spend an hour following her through the forest in #madagascar! #lemur
-
This black and white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata) is descended from a group that were relocated by a mining company. He seems unimpressed by me but I think he’s a beauty!
-
Indri are monogamous and live in small family units, “singing” to other groups to protect their territory. Imagine an angelic vuvuzela across the rainforest of #Madagascar! They are the only #lemur without a long tail and can not live in captivity.
This is the female mate of the “one-eyed” indri I posted before. Isn’t she a beauty? Yeah males and females look almost identical…

I’m traveling with Dr. James Herrera, Director of Conservation, #DukeUniversity #Lemur Center. He’s an incredible scientist, educator, and all around great guy who lives here in Mada most of the year. Also with us is Executive Director Greg Dye, who has done so much to build this organization!
