A year later, and I finally cleaned the files, code, and history. *matrix* is officially done \o/.

Testing something else (reusing the small matrix I made as proof of concept for the bigger one).
It's nothing original, but it looks nice. ;)And it will probably be better with thinner acrylic sheet and better led placement.
I guess I have to make a pcb and order some 2mm acrylic sheets :) -
I have that idea of a clock giving time in morse for quite some time.
I finally gave it a try on the matrix, to have an idea of the potential.It's fun, but I'm not convince yet. I feel it's missing something.
Maybe it's because I don't know morse code :)

I made the missing cuts yesterday and finished the assembly today.
Circles 1/32 is up and running.I still need to figure out the correct lighting to take better pictures, but that'll wait tomorrow.

I managed to cut 6 layers (of 9) before running out of ice to cool down the cutter.
I'll do the rest this evening or tomorrow depending on how fast the freezer works :) -

I realised I never cut the final version of Circles. So I'm fixing that oversight now :)
Well, because of the weather and my limited stock of ice, it might take a few days to make the cut. -

Did I spend my evening designing that board, placing and routing 129 leds by hand?
Yup, I absolutely did :)
I kinda like that kind of repetitive job, I find it to be a good relaxing time (once every 6 months, I would definitely learn how to automate it if I had to do that every day :)

Well, just for curiosity, I quickly put the outline in kicad, uploard the result in @aislerhq tool and it's not complaining.
So, this might work?
I guess I have to finish the pcb design to find out :)

Well, technically it worked. The laser cut can go through the pcb (if there is no copper).
But the process is very slow, and the result badly burnt. I'll have to figure out something else.I think I started working on the design of a linear clock in 2016. Over the years, I made at least 5 different designs, and countless color pattern experiments. I guess the next version can wait a little longer :)

It took an hour and 2kg of ice to cool the laser cutter to operating temperature, but it went there \o/
So I managed to cut the two previous design. The cut failed at some points, but it's just to get an idea, so I did not even try to make it work :)I like the 'wavy' one (on top).
And I still have to figure out where the controller board will go.

I think I'm onto something, but I'm not there yet.

Good thing, matrix has 60 columns so I can make some test.
And I like it :)
Definitely needs a 61 columns to get a symmetry. -

For the last months I spent my free time renovating a 100+ years old house.
But with today's heat that's not an option, so I'm back working on clocks :)
The plan is to apply what I learned building matrix (see this thread https://piaille.fr/@avernois/113391752318110644) to make a smaller version of my linear clocks (https://gitlab.com/avernois/clocks/-/tree/main/linear?ref_type=heads)

I had some free time this sunday to solder the last two board I had, but not enough to test them.
So I did it this evening.
1 led in the wrong direction (on 1296 hand placed leds), and 2 with bad connections. All fix, and the board are running fine now \o/I have no idea of what I'm gonna do with them. But I'll find out :)

Hey Fedifriends ! What's the minimal css framework cool kids are using nowadays ?
I finally decided to write a UI for the configuration of my clocks :)edit 2: maybe 'framework' is the wrong term. I'm looking for a css thing to make my page 'pretty' and consistent.
I can do (mostly) css, but I'm bad at pretty :)edit: even if you don't consider yourself a "cool kid", you are to me and I'd like to hear the small css framework you use :)

I cut another grid on a better plywood and no more visible leaks \o/
There is still one, but in a place I'm not really using, so that's ok (for now).I'll have to find a better way to make those kind of grid. Maybe 3d printing?

Took some time this morning to sand the faces a little bit more, also I took better(?) pictures :)

Fully assembled, and running. I like it, it so much cleaner that the previous version.
I have some adjustment for the design to make it easier to build, but otherwise, I think this one is done !

I really like the way it represents times, but dislike the base (containing the pcb).
So regularly I come back to it to find a more satisfying solution.Today, it such a day, and I think that, for once, I got something. 🧵

Maybe I'll come back later to add some animation in the display.

Finally took some time to work on the color pattern. After few hours trying to be original I ended up reusing the pattern (and code) from 'linear' with a twist.
Internally, there are almost the same clock :)edit: I uploaded the wrong video the first time. This should be better :)

And now it stands on its own with enough room for the electronic.
It still needs clamps as I have not glued the new pieces yet. -
As I should have expected, things did not really went according to the plan yesterday :)
First I broke the copper pad when desoldering the capacitor making it difficult to test that board with the new ceramic capacitor.
So I did not, and, naively, went directly to solder the new boardObviously, it did not work. The glitch I thought the capacitor would fix was back. Maybe it was not a capacity problem ?
After few hours of theories, experiments, failures I ended up stacking to capacitors and it works. Maybe it was a capacity problem ?
I guess I'll have to learn how capacitors really works, and the difference between each kind :)

And we're back in business :)
The plan is to replace the electrolityc capacitor with the ceramic I received today in the previous pcb and check it still works fine.
If that's good, I'll have to desolder everything and solder it back on the new version of the pcb. -

Took me 2 hours, and more tests, experiments and obscure forum but I solve the glitch \o/
It had nothing (almost) to do with the data line. The capacitor on the ldo was just too small (despite being the one suggested on the datasheet).Next step is to order some bigger smd capacitors, and add the missing resistor to the design and we should be good on that part of the project :)

The last components arrived today.
And after for 4 hours of tests, experiments and reading datasheets and obscure forums, I made it works :)
(gipio15 needs to be pulled low, to boot).
I still got some noise on the data line. I'll figure that out tomorrow.
