  1. Lapu‑Lapu Island Beyond the Shore: Heritage, Heroes, and the Heart of Mactan

    超越海岸的拉普拉普岛:遗产、英雄与麦丹之心

On Lapu‑Lapu Island, what truly captures the heart goes far beyond its shoreline—it’s the spirit woven into the land itself. As you step into the heart of Mactan, history seems to echo softly in the air, from the towering Lapu‑Lapu statue to the quiet grounds that honour courage and resistance. Every corner feels like a conversation with the past or present depending on where you go. This is not only the birthplace of a hero’s legacy but also a living stage where culture, tradition, and modern life intertwine, revealing a Lapu‑Lapu Island rich with life and meaning beyond its scenic coast.

Lapu‑Lapu Island is more than its famous beaches—it’s a living story of courage, culture, and community, anchored by the towering Lapu‑Lapu statue. "“Soup Nazi” actor Larry Thomas will be picking up his ladle in a British Columbia restaurant to raise money for victims of last month’s attack on Vancouver’s Lapu Lapu Day festival.

Thomas, who is best known for his guest role as a strict soup seller on the sitcom Seinfeld, says he’ll be serving at the Greens And Beans Deli in New Westminster, B.C., on Sunday.

He says the April 26 attack that killed 11 people was a 'terrible thing,' prompting him to reprise his fundraising relationship with the restaurant that stretches back more than 20 years.

Los Angeles-based Thomas first served at Greens And Beans at a fundraiser for the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and has also served to help other causes, including wildfire relief in Canada."

  15. PM Mark Carney, leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, on April 27th tragedy at the #lapulapu festival in Vancouver:
    (via The Guardian)

"The strength and resilience of the Filipino community is highlighted by the term 'bayanihan', a tradition of helping out your neighbour in a spirit of civic mindedness."

"We will comfort the grieving, we will care for each other, we will unit in common purpose."

  16. It’s the final day of the Canadian election #elxn45. It was already the most consequential and unique election in decades.

Now we are dealing with a mass casualty, likely racist, act. These two things have never happened together in Canadian history that I know of.

I hate this timeline so much. I just want people to love each other and be kind.

    😢

I hope people vote for kindness tomorrow.

Not hate, not revenge, not fear.

See attached #OpenStreetMap screenshot for reference.

    1. The part in red is now owned by the National Museum of the Philippines. It was supposedly transferred to them sometime in 2020 during the lock-down. It was originally owned by Rizal Park.

    2. The part in blue, the National Planetarium, will be moved to the part in red. Modernised and bigger.

    3. The part in blue was transferred to Rizal Park.

    4. The part in red will also have other buildings, other than the new National Planetarium.

    ---

    * The giant #LapuLapu monument was already gone, not even its frames, when I visited earlier.

    * They started to remove the Philippine map (in the red part) last week or so, which was noticed by a Filipino, which went viral last week.

    * The part in red was closed since during the lock-down of 2020 and was never opened since. Construction (or destruction?) only started, supposedly, this year.

    ---

#Trivia 1: According to my parents, the “Sentinel of Freedom” (a.k.a. giant Lapu-Lapu monument) was originally a skating rink (quad skates).

#Trivia 2: There was also an open restaurant owned by a deaf mute association (if someone remembers them, please share so I can update this) around the area in red. If I remember correctly they were located at the lower-left corner of the red area. They were serving in roller skates (quad skates).

The last time I saw them, if I remember correctly, was sometime mid-to-late 1990s, before they closed.

So… yeah… too bad I was not able to take photos of the area before it was permanently closed. #Memories gone. 😭
