  1. Made an interactive thing. Mostly just some thoughts I had quickly scrawled out after work (and then finished the thing today).

  2. We have a writeup from this weekend 's L5 Cyber Cafe at Processing Community Day on the devlog.

Thanks again to all who participated. There were 300 people registered for the conference and the exhibit was set up 10am to 7pm.

We also held a packed workshop Creatively Permacomputing: An Introduction to Creative Coding with L5

Thanks to alll who presented work in the exhibition, and to everyone that came through

  3. And layer by layer, I let my ideas "sediment", so that the form of a plant would become the haunting presence of what remains of our reality: a virtuality as a ruin.

I based my work on one of the most classic rules of the L-System, introducing very little variation, to present what is essentially an archetype: the ordinary nature of a formula, in order to reveal the ordinary nature of our hubris. Every day we walk on grass without realizing that we are treading on life, as we fail to realize that our uses of technology fragment both our world and our perception of the world.

There's a little bit of all that in this modest work I've titled Digitalis, as a tribute to this plant we've turned into a pharmakon, all too often forgetting its very life. It is an attempt: we should engage in a dialogue whith the ghost in the code, the daemon who weaves a fragile hauntology of our ordinary reality.

Here are the first results of this research, under the auspices of Lua.

  4. And suddenly, a little bit of code generates the specter of a plant.

I've made good progress on my plant generator. And step by step, as I've been refining the texture of this plant's design, I've arrived at a spectral fragility that interests me.

I had started with the rather geological (and "concrete") idea of a plant fossil as insignificant as a blade of grass, but given these results, I think I prefer to explore the abstract idea of a trace further, through the ghostly sensation of a plant.

In this age of mass extinctions, we do not give enough consideration to living organisms as ordinary as grass, which we regard as a simple setting to our modern lives, a sort of organic unreality that we inhabit. We have reached a stage where we are virtualizing our own lives in order to accelerate the virtualization of life as a whole.

I still need to work on the background of this generator, even though the result is already interesting as is. I'm less interested now in depicting geological strata than in capturing the sensation of a vibration, one that carries the fragile traces left by life itself.

  5. I am trying to mimic the look of a hand-drawn line using only code (in lua with Löve and L5). For now, I am testing a solution that involves distributing a multitude of tiny dots within a rectangle... That seems like a pretty clumsy solution to me, and it would probably be disastrous in terms of performance.

I would probably need to use a noise function with shaders, and then add some kind of Gaussian distribution to concentrate the visible colors. I should also explore the great P5.brush library more thoroughly, or I could simply use a texture image.

But why keep it simple (stupid) when you can make your life baroque? And more realistically (or should I say more virtually), I'd like this to be a pure simulation: a realm of artifice at the heart of the real.

I am still far from the perfect imperfection of charcoal.

  6. I was able to roughly prototype the three layers of my fossilized plant generator: 1) a generative noise background that will serve as a palette and will define the overall color sensation of the generated piece; 2) a generative layer of strata to give a "mineral" feel and contrast with the plant itself; 3) the most important part: the plant generator.

I created a randomized L-System based on a rule that I found online. I might tweak it a bit more, but I like the idea of modeling something as modest and insignificant as a blade of grass.

However, I'm running into a few limitations that might push me to work on something more abstract and angular, a more cubist interpretation of a fossil.

Compared to P5.js, there are two tools I need that are missing in L5: blendMode and splineVertex. I'm going to try to adapt them in Lua, especially the first one. I noticed that something similar already exists in the LÖVE engine. However, I think I really like this "collage" effect of the lines, which could be enhanced by adding a bit of randomness to the orientation of the plant's lines.

It is always fascinating to discover the mathematical patterns hidden in nature, and beyond what they reveal about our loss of direct connection to the mysteries of the cosmos that surround us, and that also animate similarly our body and our mind. They also reveal indirectly something more epistemological; namely, mathematics has been reduced in our late modernity to a utilitarian dimension, if not simply a mercantile one in most cases, focused on efficiency, and stripped of the crucial importance of mathematics in our sacred relationship with reality.

  7. I'm rediscovering Lua through L5, and I'm working on an L-System to build a fossilized plant generator. To implement it, I need classes in Lua to create objects (plants, to be precise, which are subjects rather than objects, but that's a debate for another time).

As I delve deeper into Lua than I ever have before, I'm discovering metatables and several ways to create objects. Metatable as a tabula rasa of the cumbersome perspectives on what is a language. (A metatable for shaping a metaphysics, just as hyperbole is used to eat hypersoup...)

I'm a bit torn. Is this completely far-fetched, or, on the contrary, an elegant solution? One that lets a minimalist language provide not just tools, but tools for making tools, a “mechanisms over policies” policy? I think I'm leaning toward the second option.

Weird is often synonym of elegance.

  8. A sort of art jam begins today, centered on L5 and, indirectly for me, on the concept of permacomputing. I believe this concept conveys something essential regarding the political tension around technology: the idea of resistance. One might view this as a way to clear Luddism of its possible nihilistic traces and shift it into a philosophy of hacking as resistance. It represents also a critique of left-wing accelerationism, yet one that harbors no illusions about the true nature of technology. It requires an awareness not only of the ideology conveyed by technology, but also of the social struggles that hides within it. We should never forget that it is not we who govern technology, but technology that governs us. Technology is the beating heart of our unconscious mind.

To this end, I am brushing up on my rather vague knowledge of Lua (I am more used to using JavaScript to generate 2D or 3D artworks) and discovering the LÖVE game engine. Rather than approaching it in a merely superficial way, I am trying to dive into their documentations (Lua and LÖVE) to discover their full range of possibilities.

Perhaps the engine's name is a sign; after all, ancient Greek had several words for love, one of which is agape. If we strip this concept of the layers added by Christianity and return to the presocratic era of an universal physis, we find within it a certain awareness that is worth preserving.

So I'm thinking of creating a sort of plant generator for this jam. I have in mind a kind of abstract, infinite herbarium, rendered in ash-gray tones, to capture the potential for endings and rebirths through the form of plant life.

The need to organize pessimism may begin with sifting through the ashes in search of some sign of hope.

This inspired me to pull out my copy of the book. In chapter 5 Auto-generator there is a module on the classic mathematics game Langton's Ant, that 'simulates the molecular logic of an ant.' I manually translated the code in the book to the L5 library in Lua.

Here's a recording showing it running in VS Codium, using the new L5lua extension.

  21. Day 23: Work on MOLD continues. Reduces the wasted cycles a bunch by added support for input driven process in L5. Also decided to see how cramped the default 31 x 31 editor is: status, pretty cramped.

  22. Day 21: Mostly just some small changes to MOLD and the start of a new console that can possibly support text styling. Also, changed MOLD's redraw to be input driven. No reason for it to run at 60FPS when the world moves in lock step. Drops CPU usage by a 1/10.

  23. Day 20: MOLD didn't make the deadline, got distracted and lost track of time. However, I still got a neat little thing to work on.
