  2. I think I finally solved where my indecisiveness about making the #KaendorRPG a first person open world game or a top down party game comes from:

    I first got the idea to make a game when RPG Maker was free on steam, and that's a 2D top down engine. When I decided to go with Godot instead, I still thought such game would be the easiest to make.

    I still think of the games I was using as references for what could try as inspirations, even though most of my ideas are now something very different.

  3. @supernovafiles A top-down, party-based RPG with simple models and animations, but very fancy dynamic-lighting, in which every light except daylight is emanating from a specific source like torch, lantern, glowing mushroom, or spell, most of which can be extinguished or moved.

    Light on plot, but with dynamic creature behavior to simulate an ecology in which all creatures have a self-preservation instinct, and a lot of interactivity to create a lot of emergent play and story.

  4. Idea for a simple base building system for my #KaendorRPG:

    Around the open world environment, there are various abandoned houses, forts, and ruined keeps. The player can claim them and set characters to work on restoring them. The ruined building models get some scaffolding added to them to show they are being repaired.
    Repair progress is slow, but the player can buy construction material items in town, which give the workers a huge speed boost for the next 10 repair steps.

  5. Reasons why I have decided on going with a first-person RPG instead of a top-down RPG.

    - I am not very interested in complex combat and controlling multiple characters.
    - I am really interested in stealth, which works best with just one character.
    - The setting is mostly dense forests, which works best with a camera close to the ground.
    - I want views of large landscapes and skies, which doesn't work in top-down view.
    - Enemy combat AI should be easier to program.

  6. Cool put probably stupid game feature idea of the day:

    I want to have a stealth system in which your noise level depends on the ground material, your sneak skill rank, and the amount of equipment you carry. (Cool.)

    I also want to use that to determine your buoyancy while in water. At light load you automatically float up all the time, at high load you sink down. Your swim skill affects the speed of that drift while swimming forward. (Probably stupid.)

  7. There will be more work required for models, textures, and animations. But compared to the creation of assets, I think the gameplay mechanics would actually be considerably simpler to program.

    And a Sword & Sorcery game inspired by Conan and Elric that blends gameplay elements from Thief, System Shock 2, Deus Ex, and Morrowind would absolutely kick ass! 🔥 🔥 🔥

  8. One gunfight into Jagged Alliance 2, I am already thinking this would be an amazing game to yoink ideas and mechanics from for a Sword & Sorcery mercenary RPG.

  9. @intrepidhero The flip-flopping continues.

    Two very strong reasons that favor the open-world exploration Metroidvania are my very strong interests in stealth gameplay and environmental storytelling.
    These are the two aspects about games where I have a lot of ideas and I think I have something meaningful to express about fantasy stories.
    And they both just work so much better in first person with a single character than in top-down with a party.

    After very seriously considering to make the #KaendorRPG a first-person open-world game for about two weeks, I am now again leaning much stronger towards a zoomed-out, top-down third-person perspective and UI scheme.
    It does create a more detached play experience for players than first-person or over the shoulder third-person, but I think this is actually desirable for the game in my mind.

    After further research and planning, I have come to think that a 2D isometric RPG would not actually be meaningfully easier or faster to make than a 3D open-world RPG. And that one would allow me to make something much closer to my hypothetical perfect game.

    Stealth Archer Metroidvania.

    A game concept inspired by Thief, Morrowind, Gothic, Super Metroid, and Stalker.
