  1. "I was today days old" when I found out that the same artist sculpted Astarion and Alkibiadis from AC Odyssey and it explains... things.

  2. Welp.

Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader was on sale for like 60% off, down to $20.
    So yeah.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised that I'm starting to go down a CRPG blackhole.
    excited to play some sci-fi...
a bit too rare for turn-based games.

  3. I was teaching some 11-14 year olds to write choice based #interactivefiction this year, and at one point in the course I ask if there are any #ttrpg players (answer: always yes so far).

Then I propose that choice based fiction has a lot in common with with #ttrpg but one huge difference that changes everything for the author/GM: the magic moments in #ttrpg are when the players have their characters solve a problem in a way the GM never thought of, but is perfect for those characters in that game. While the magic in choice games comes when the author offers a choice the player would never have thought of, but is perfect in light of the choices made in this play of this game.

Which means in #ttrpg your role as GM is to encourage the explosion of possibilities, while in choice it is to make all the possibilities special (which requires them to be limited).

Interestingly, they all agreed without hesitation that unexpected in character problem solving was exactly what was magic in #ttrpg compared to #crpg

  4. Started playing #BaldursGate3. And boy, it's surprisingly frustrating.

I loved "Divinity: Original Sin 2" by Larian. And there's a lot of nice things to say about it. Plot and characters are really well done.

But #DnD as a system for #CRPG is just ... not good. Fights are bland. The spell and sleep system is terrible.

And the annoying controls are not helping.

Might be reloading part of my act 1 because of a mix of these factors, as the current run is stuck in a bad spot. 😑

  5. Ah... What an emotional roller coaster. My second time finishing Disco Elysium.🥹

Such a fantastic experience. Would not recommend enduring it on the original Nintendo Switch however as it crashed frequently but oh well... nice to have it on the go!

For fans of Detective stories, fantastic writing, heady/artsy neo-noir and isometric CRPG experiences.🎮

  6. Just finished #Sunderfolk. It's a fun little tactics game, and I really enjoyed it.

It's a solid turn based tactics game at its core. But where it really shines is the worldbuilding and storytelling. The part where you talk to the NPCs between battles is where the game gets much of its vibes from.

  7. More CRPG rants:

If your game is in the fantasy equivalent of the "Early Modern Era" but STILL uses "Hollywood fake-medieval brown mud palette" for everything, is it really? Or are you just doing "Stereotypical 'medieval' world but with some gunpowder?"

Not only was real medieval times much more colorful but the Early Modern Era was hella more colorful.

  8. Athletics is one of Baldur's Gate 3's most valuable Strength skills.

If you want better shove success, long jumps, and strong Strength checks, this guide explains every way to improve it:
    • Skill proficiency
    • Strength increases
    • Expertise
    • Temporary buffs
    • Equipment

Useful for both new players and optimized builds.

  9. Oh and here is something that will get me executed in public:

Obsidian aren't all that good at making games.

They're good at writing stories, not making games.

  10. So anyway, after my "top down isometric rant" yesterday:

There's a guy at work who said "I thought I liked Reggae, but it turns out I only like Bob Marley".

I have concluded the same about this genre after buying many games over the years: "I thought I liked top down isometric RPGs, but it turns out I only like Baldur's Gate".

...BG3, at this point. I can play BG1 and 2 without too much frustration but BG3 is the only game in the genre I actually enjoy and play repeatedly.

  11. Watching a video analyzing how it feels to go back to Pillars of Eternity after playing BG3, and the games different approaches and stories, and I think the conclusion is correct:

BG3 is a DnD campaign. The amazing Amelia Tyler is the DM and some problems are deep, some are shallow, but the game is action packed and game mechanics are creative.

Pillars is literature. And you might not actually be looking for literature. But if you ARE, you should play it in 2026.

  12. As for Pillars of Eternity: My problem there is that I just don't find all the deep philosophic questions the plot asks interesting.

Just call me shallow if you will.

  13. It doesn't help the Pathfinder games that Owlcat insists on adding outside elements to their games, often timed even. It's like they don't trust players to just enjoy a solid RPG, they insist on adding Castle Management (first game) and Army management (Second game) when all I want to is to play a fantasy CRPG in peace.

  14. I think the reasons why I love BG3 but find Divine Divinity 2, Pillar of Etrrnity and Pathfinder WotR boring or just frustrating are twofold:

    1. I just love Forgotten Realms as a setting while for example the setting in DD2 is way too grimdark. And I loathe everything grimdark. In fact it seems the other games too goes out of their way to make their settings edgy for edgelord reasons.

    2. The higher budget means better actors. And better writing.

  15. Episode 100 is here! 🎉 We finally made it after doing a show every 2 weeks for 4 years. And what better way to celebrate than showcasing the games that inspired the 1980 release of Rogue?

We’ll talk through brief histories, fan letters, and live playthrough reactions of:

    1971 Star Trek
    1975 pedit5
    1976 Colossal Cave Adventure
    1980 Rogue

  16. I don't know what it is, but I really, really like the world of Wasteland 2.

I'm not very far into the game (20% as a wild guestimate) and what has been there so far actually has all been really generic.

    But it feels nice.
It looks really nice, But I think it might be more because of the character writing. There are raiders and mutants you fight a lot, but the people you talk to seem like reasonable people living regular lives most of the time.

  17. Boy it feels so good being back as a charisma based class again (BG3).

In a Tabletop it makes sense that not everyone is a bard / paladin / warlock, you have one or two dedicated "faces".

In a CRPG? not being able to talk properly to everyone just sucks.

  18. Only 10 minutes into resuming my 2 year old Wasteland 2 save and completely getting my ass handed to me on the encounter I had been stuck on last time I played, and immediately remembering why tactics RPGs are the coolest shit ever.

  19. #cyberganked update

I think there have been CRPGs where you encounter another party that has been trying to "advance" in the game world like yours. I'm using Daz3D (or hired actors) for all characters and Daz3D has a lot of clothes and accessories that you can buy and use in a hodge podge, to make opponents look like how your party might. #CRPG

  20. Today's idle musings are about what an RPG system could look like if it's specifically designed to be run entirely by a computer, without needing to make concessions to by calculatable by average humans on the fly with pen and paper. Randomization doesn't have to based on dice. Turns and actions can be set to fractions of a second, or there might not even be need for turns at all.

A percentage-based system would be intuitive, but there's surely many more options.

  21. I made a small mod for Might & Magic X to fix a lot of playability issues and a few bugs. This isn't a balance or content mod, but I think it makes the game play a lot more smoothly. Increasing the movement speed was at the top of my list.

  22. Am I the only weirdo who isn't excited for Larian's new take on Divinity? I LOVE BG3, but the Divinity series has always left me... bored I think is the best word. It never clicked with me at all.

I find the world utterly depressing and uninspiring to be honest and I am one of the few players who look forward to BG4 regardless who makes it, rather than Larian's new Divinity.

  23. New Baldur's Gate 3 run: May I present Quinn, the half-elven bard (first bard in BG3 for me!).

Added mini-challenge: No multiclass for any party members (or Quinn).
