I picked up a well-used copy of "Your Atari Computer", as recommended by Dave Arlington in his "Learning Atari ACTION!" yt playlist.
I was delighted to see that the previous owner had found and transcribed onto the title page that classic description by #JosephWeizenbaum of the "computer bums".

The way #JosephWeizenbaum frames the metaphor using an individual gambler misses the point of who gets to use the technology, because it is the gambling venue, using that same math, that tilts the way games are played to work in favor of the house.

One of the analogies that #JosephWeizenbaum uses in #ComputerPowerAndHumanReason is to the use of statistics and probability by professional gamblers to make a living, while discussing the compulsive programmer vs the compulsive gambler. The professional is the person who uses the tool, the compulsive the one who does not.

Der Artikel bringt die Funktionsweise und die Missverständnisse um #ChatGPT recht gut auf den Punkt. Die eigentlich spannende Erkenntnis ist, wie leicht sich Menschen täuschen lassen (insbesondere wenn die etwas glauben möchten). Andererseits wissen wir das aber auch schon seit #JosephWeizenbaum's #ELIZA aus den 60ern.
