The teshuvot for trans-inclusive Judaism are really interesting.
(Of course I immediately clicked on the circumcision and conversion one)

After conversion to #Judaism does one immediately become a member of the reptilian masters feeding off human negative energy or is there some sort of training school (and I guess genetic manipulation) involved?
Also when do I get the license to use the space lasers?
-
I would just like to state now, for the record, and so you are all forewarned, that once I’ve converted to #Judaism I’m going to be one of those really annoying people who have (probably rainbow-themed) #Jewish-related clothing, bags, pins as their daily #fashion.
See: how little shame I have walking around Tokyo in Tom Of Finland t-shirts and totes.

(PS have to check if Tom of Finland was an antisemite. That could get awkward.)

Well I read through the #Amidah just following the #Hebrew. I occasionally looked at the transliteration to check I wasn’t totally wrong.
It took FOREVER so I hope HaShem is filled with patience… Do the rabbis of the Talmud ever say it’s possible to cause HaShem to fall asleep? 😅
Still, impressed with my progress. No way I could have done that a couple of months ago.

So the synagogue where I’d like to join a conversion program requires two reference letters (in addition to other security check stuff, which is normal of course). But I don’t work anymore so I can’t ask my employer…
What would be an appropriate person?
-
I had a reply from a rabbi about distance conversion! The program doesn’t start till October and I guess I’d need to fly to Singapore but this is progress after all!

If buying a domain name means anything let no one question my commitment 😂
(I don’t know exactly what I’m going to do with it yet)

(I’ve deleted my LabHope site but am keeping the name as in future I guess I’ll have some projects that will fit there) -
Earlier today someone (who shall remain nameless to protect their identity) asked me, “Why would you want to be a Jew?”
It’s a great question for potential converts.
But I’m curious for those of you who were born into Jewish families, if you were to answer the question, what would your answer be?
-
This spoke to me as not only someone on the path to conversion but also as a sociologist of community.

Experts on #Kabbalah and #Jewish #mythology, if the #souls of Jewish converts are those created by Abraham and Sarah when they couldn’t have children, where are these souls residing before converts are born?
-
Do Jews need labels? Some people say that we should stop using denominational terms. They say, "Don't use words like Orthodox, Reform. Just say “Jewish” and leave it at that." They hold that doing so will create more Jewish unity.
But that doesn’t work: how can we describe anything in religion – or in philosophy or history – without using words that have defined meanings? (Further discussion in comments below)

Lehrhaus! A new way to socialize and learn Jewishly in #Somerville, Massachusetts, right near #Boston! The Jewish #tavern #Lehrhaus is slated to open in January says Rabbi Charlie Schwartz. 425 Washington St. in Inman Square. Kosher food, cocktails and spirits, and opportunities for learning Torah, Tanya, and Talmud!

So I’ve never eaten, let alone made #challah before but I’d like to try. Is there a simple recipe I could file for someone who is very much not a baker?

At Hanukkah I asked one of my Jewish friends how she learnt the tunes to the blessings and she said that she couldn’t remember because her family had done it since she was a baby.
As a future convert, how would I:
- learn the tunes (and *which* tunes? There are different versions)
- get over the crippling embarrassment of singing a blessing even in the privacy of my own home 😅 -
Sometimes an Orthodox rabbi will cooperate with a non-Orthodox #rabbi. I’ve had a friend convert with a Beit Din of Orthodox & Conservative. Are there any rabbis doing this that you know of?

What controversies exist in converting to Judaism? How can we grow together as a community instead of splintering into factions? JTS Chancellor Ismar Schorsch offers a voice from the center. He continues his stance of reaching out in love to all Reform, Orthodox, Sephardic, and Conservative Jews. Do you know of local collaboration between rabbis of different denominations? We'd love to hear about it, please comment
-
One interesting point of convergence is that most modern Jews, from Reform to Modern Orthodox, agree that we no longer live in communities where halakhah is enforceable. In that sense, halakhah is all personal autonomy. Any Jew - even Orthodox, "could" work on Shabbat, eat pork, or not daven daily prayers. That's genuine autonomy. The difference comes in our theology, and what practices we feel are obligatory based on those beliefs.

The original and in some ways still common classic Reform Jewish about the Talmud is shown in these quotes (see image.)
Note that since the 1970s there has been a pro-Talmud, return-towards-tradition wing of Reform, like @TheRaDR and many other Reform rabbis. There was an amazing Reform rav near me until a few years ago who did writings on the Talmud and encouraged more observance and belief.
-
#joiningthetribe for those converting to Judaism works as well :-) For those considering this, our havurah put together a list of suggested books to start with. One is -
“Living Judaism: The Complete Guide to Jewish Belief, Tradition and Practice”, Wayne Dosick.
Written by an originally Reform rabbi who joined the Conservative movement, & who appreciates Orthodox traditions, this is a unique and wide ranging introduction to Jewish belief and practice.
-
Like, one of the well-known rabbis that I most admire is @TheRaDR and the social and political work she does based on Jewish texts and reasoning.
Which Reform texts should I be reading and is reasoning still linked to the Talmud etc?
Thank you!
-
I’ve spent so long reading about Conservative Judaism that now I realize I don’t know enough about Reform/Liberal Judaism. I’m particularly confused by the position on Halacha and I think I need to shift my thinking about it because the aspect I liked most in Conservative Judaism is the link to the written texts (I guess I see responsa in a bit like articles with citations ).
But in terms of social action and me it does seem Reform suits better? Help!

Confession: I’ve still to see #FiddlerOnTheRoof. It’s not available for streaming here in Japan so I need to get the DVD.
Also, I got the DVD for Yentl but haven’t watched it yet.
I think when you have #depression the walk to the DVD player is like crossing an ocean.

@sheepchase @imstilljeremy like #joiningthetribe too simple and direct
-
I realised it was incredibly remiss of me to start asking about people’s experiences of conversion without giving my own (in process) story, so here it is for the others #JoiningTheTribe or those #Giyur who might be interested.
(Might be a few toots long; not sure about the convention for this):
I’m from the UK where you probably know there aren’t many Jews compared to the US. I’m also from the North, far from London and not from Manchester or Leeds where there are Jewish communities.

@naftaliq @imstilljeremy I like #giyur, though I guess for those just starting to get to know Judaism they might not be familiar with it.
Maybe #giyur and #JoiningTheTribe will bring in everyone with something to share.
-
@sheepchase I am not so sure that marriage is as common a reason as it used to be. 25 years ago, yes, but now many Reform, Renewal and Reconstructing #rabbis will officiate for mixed couples. Most of the conversion candidates I meet have other reasons, or have decided to convert after many years of marriage with a Jew.
-
@sheepchase another suggestion: #joiningthetribe, inspired by the phrase Member of the Tribe/MoT which is often used to refer to fellow Jews
I’m partial to #giyur because as much as I did and do choose to be a Jew, there’s a part of me that wants to point out that born-Jews also choose the extent to which they are Jewish. Judaism is a religion of 𝒅𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈, after all.
I’m also converting for non-marriage reasons, by the way!
