Had no idea too much cow's milk could cause iron deficiency in toddlers. I wasn't told anything in the early 2010s as a toddler mum, just that they could have cow's milk from age 1.
Wonder if it doesn't get picked up til later in many cases, apropos of this school conversation the other day:
Student #1 (to me): Miss, all us brown girls, we all have low iron. It's a thing.
(To random Sri Lankan Aussie female friend walking past) Do you have low iron?
Student #2 (laughing) Yes!
Next time I'll ask if they drink a lot of cow's milk!

CW: discussion of IV infusions/iron deficiency
Have any of you ever had IV iron infusions? I’ve had on and off iron deficiency anemia all of my adult life, but after my autoimmune diagnosis, my ferritin started plummeting even with supplementation.
It’s been well over a year that I’ve been fighting with all my doctors to get me an iron infusion covered by Alberta Health and my GI specialist is finally helping me do it!!!
I’ve been prescribed Monoferric iron — a one time infusion, instead of the traditional infusion that requires multiple long visits. This helps accommodate my energy limitations and neurodivergence. Sitting for a 2-3 hour IV infusion takes *a lot* out of me so a one time 30 minute infusion is compassionate care.
Have you had a Monoferric iron infusion? Pls tell me about it!

Up to 75% of patients presenting for colorectal cancer surgery have iron deficiency.

CW: ph (physical health)
I just got my blood results and apparently I have anemia again, which might explain why I'm constantly so tired.
Well I got some of the blood results. I don't know my iron levels yet, which I'm really curious about now, and some other stuff.
Last time I had too high iron levels and my doctor told me to stop taking iron supplements. He also told me I only needed to test my blood every 6 months.
My erythrocyte and hemoglobin levels were just in the green area then, after being too low for very long. He said that didn't matter.I didn't listen to him. I only halved my iron supplement intake and went to have my blood tested again after 4 months and apparently I was right to worry about getting an anemia again.
If the rest of the results come in within the next 1,5 hours I can still go to the doc today to talk about them.

AAAS: "Iron shortage threatens microbes key to food chain in Southern Ocean" The beautiful blue-green in this satellite image from Novmber 2015 represents phytoplankton blooms swirling in the ocean around the Kerguelen Islands. Every spring in Antarctica the surrounding iron-rich waters of the Southern Ocean rise from below + the single-celled plants suck up carbon from the atmosphere for photosynthesis, thus forming the base of the food chain. This sustains krill, which is in turn are a major food source for fish, whales, and penguins — not to mention humans, increasingly competing from fishing boats. Worrisomely, signs over the past quarter-century suggest phytoplankton are increasingly starved of iron. Aside from the ecosystem effects, this could affect the global caarbon cycle, as half of all the carbon CO2 take up in the ocean from the atmosphere occurs in these waters. The phytoplanton stresses contradicts what climate modeling had predicted, perhaps because of ocean acidification, or the warming ocean is increasing the metabolism of the phytoplankton, or stratification of ocean waters may be blocking iron upwelling. But some scientists think that as the models predict, at some point the winds will shift southward + the phytoplankton bloom will be 'lusher than ever.' Remember, half the oxygen we breath comes from these little critters. #irondeficiency #climatechange
