A presentation at this month's Society for Experimental Biology Conference showed that birds can maintain high energy expenditures by using lactate, normally a waste product, to rapidly restore hemoglobin's function. This takes place in mitochondria of red blood cells--a feature that mammalian cells lack.

Scavenger receptor CD163 detoxes #hemoglobin (Hb) via haptoglobin–Hb (Hp-Hb) uptake, but can also bind free Hb directly. Richard Zhou & Matthew Higgins solve the CD163-Hb structure to reveal that CD163 arms allow receptor promiscuity when Hp is absent @PLOSBiology https://plos.io/4eOLuIv

The #macrophage CD163 receptor clears free #hemoglobin in the bloodstream by binding the HpHb complex. The #cryoEM structure of CD163-HpHb complex, by @chingshinhuang &co, reveals how CD163-mediated endocytosis clears different HpHb isoforms @PLOSBiology https://plos.io/4nNBbGI

I felt a bit meh during my last few #running races. Could not push hard on uphills and constantly short of breath. So I went to get my blood tests done. #Anemic. Very low iron levels. Very low #hemoglobin. Explains few things. Scheduled on iron infusion and bought 100mg(!) Iron tablets plus #Vegan multivitamin complex.
Don't be like me. Get yourself checked regularly to make sure.

Sara Naseri looking into existing research on what could be discovered through testing menstrual blood and was shocked by what she found—or, rather, by what she didn’t. https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a46203567/period-menstrual-pad-pap-smear-qvin/
Q-Pad tests for #BloodSugar, #thyroid, #hemoglobin, inflammation, and #fertility hormone levels, with #COVID and high-risk #HPV testing capabilities coming in the near future.

This is seriously cool! With all the fake tech hype all around, let's not forget there is real amazing progress happening.
#FDA Approves First #CRISPR Gene Editing Treatment for #SickleCellDisease
"physicians remove a person’s own bone marrow #StemCells, edit them, destroy the untreated #BoneMarrow and then reinfuse the edited cells... Cas9 deactivates BCL11A in stem cells and they begin producing the fetal #hemoglobin and creating #RedBloodCells with a normal shape"

Steller’s sea cows were hunted to #extinction off #Alaska within 30 years of first observation by Europeans. Their closest relatives ( #manatees, #dugongs) live in much warmer waters.
How did Steller’s sea cows adapt to cold? Signore et al. (2023) reconstructed the #hemoglobin and showed a single mutation provided more oxygen to tissues for higher metabolic rates via multiple mechanisms - lower O2 affinity, higher solubility, etc.

The very first thing I ever did in a lab was work on reptile allosteric modulators of hemoglobin, way back in 1993-94.
This new @CurrentBiology article provoked some nostalgia"Evolution and molecular basis of a novel allosteric property of crocodilian #hemoglobin"
