  1. The Icelandic referendum has rejected joining the EU.

So what's that got to do with the UK?

Directly, nothing, but those of us hoping for future referendums could do worse than look at how the vote was conducted and the allegations of interference from outside of the country.
There's a clear urban / rural split in Iceland that may not easily transfer to the UK, but other factors •may• bear study

This could have relevance to popular votes on rejoining the EU or for Scottish independence, or greater Welsh devolution, or Irish unification.

  2. @fencoul I'm very much reminded of this moment from Star Trek The Next Generation episode, which led to it being banned by terrestrial TV for many years.

  3. 1) @mastodon.social, with his latest @irishtimes column (sub req) on the Irish Language, Anthem and Flag

Interesting that the flag is seen as a gating item for unification given the prominence of orange as part of the tricolor. More understandable if the flag was completely green like some of the old Fenian flags

In the UK it is an article of faith that the NHS is the best health system in the world.

In Ireland, the health system is constantly bemoaned.

So in the context of #Irishunification #IrishUnity healthcare is a key issue.

A major 2018 Lancet study of health outcomes in 195 countries. It used a wide range of metrics.

Ireland’s health system ranked 11th best in the world. The UK’s 23rd.
