Question for legal War scholars:
If the US didn't declare War on Iran, was it a war crime for a US sub to attack an unarmed Iranian frigate in international waters?
Do the laws of war allow sneak attacks on unarmed navy vessels during a retroactively declared military "excursion"? -
I don't think the UK media have made nearly enough noise about the US Navy sinking an *unarmed* Iranian warship and then, in clear violation of the Geneva Conventions, leaving them to drown.
This is a heinous war crime which the media would be rightly up in arms about if any country that wasn't nominally an "ally" had done it.

OMG, now it turns out that the IRIS Dena, the frigate torpedoed by the US Navy with the loss of most of its crew, may have been *unarmed* at the time.
If true, that must surely make it a war crime. Especially as the US Navy made no attempt to rescue the drowning sailors.
(And why are we having to read about this in the Indian press? Where are the UK media on this one?)

#SriLanka authorities said 32 people were rescued, which sank off their coast. They said others died, without giving a number.
The vessel was the #IRISDena, one of #Iran’s newest warships.
The frigate was the centerpiece of a 2-ship international tour in 2023 that included port calls in countries including South Africa & Brazil. It was accompanied by the support ship IRIS Makran, a converted #oil tanker.
