  1. Trinity post 3/?

Back to another Infocom post after who knows how long? It's been hard balancing it with Inform 7 content and my own game dev. This time, a survey of audience and critical responses to Trinity concludes.

  16. As good as they were, AMFV and Spellbreaker were Infocom's worst-selling games to date. Infocom's financial situation was dire, as it appeared that game sales were not enough to undo the financial damage that Cornerstone had done to the company. Such are the conditions of Ballyhoo's production, 1986's first Infocom release, a strange mix of brilliance and missteps. Let's dive in.

  18. In today's post, I summarize the narrative and thematic features of the Zork trilogy. My goal, ultimately, is to show how the Enchanter series mirrors these games in important and interesting ways.

  29. Gold Machine's monstrous, ten-part series on A Mind Forever Voyaging concludes today! Thanks for coming along for the ride.

Next comes the end of the six game Zork saga: Spellbreaker! To celebrate this milestone, I'll be typing up a let's play over at the Interactive Fiction Community Forum. I'll post a link when it goes up in a few days.

  30. As I mentioned the other day, Gold Machine will be turning its attention to Spellbreaker soon. I am thinking of doing a typed "let's play" over at the IF Community Forum. Would that sort of thing interest you? It'd be fun to get some discussions going. I'll likely start sometime this week.

  31. Hard to believe that I'll be done with _A Mind Forever Voyaging_ next week! Next up will be Spellbreaker, the last game set in the Zork universe (Zork Zero? Never heard of it). Attitudes toward Spellbreaker have shifted over the years. It's the lowest-rated "Enchanter" game on IFDB, but it's the only one to make the 2019 "top 50 of all time" poll. Boosts appreciated!

    I'd rank them
    1) Enchanter
    2) Spellbreaker
    3) Sorcerer.

    Which is your favorite?

  33. ICYMI: Last Monday's penultimate post on Steve Meretzky's "A Mind Forever Voyaging" takes a look at shortcomings in its political critique, paying especially close attention to its treatment of white supremacy and evangelism.

"Ronald Reagan and Lee Atwater did not invent racism, after all. They capitalized on it and, yes, emboldened some of its adherents."

The final post will come a week from Monday (the 16th). Stay tuned...

  35. While I've argued against popular criticisms of A Mind Forever Voyaging, some legitimate issues with its political critique remain. Therefore, it is time to acknowledge shortcomings in Steve Meretzky's dystopic vision.

  36. ICYMI: Last week's A Mind Forever Voyaging post:

Many have argued that Perry's affect of untroubled self-awareness is unbelievable. That is a reasonable conclusion. He must know that his wife and son are not real. How can he stand it?

Perry's ability to surrender and attain his humanity, all in one movement, rises from a rich philosophical tradition. He lives by faith--faith in his experience, faith in his humanity.

A Mind Forever Voyaging's Protagonist Perry Simm's decision to remain human no matter the cost.

"Perry never wants to be anything but human because to be human is, to him, the greatest good, and worth any sacrifice."

  38. For those encountering my content for the first time: my nine-part series on Infocom's A Mind Forever Voyaging (1985) begins here. Two posts remain. This is already the most that a single author has written about this game, and the first concerted effort to focus exclusively on textual and cultural analysis.

The intended audience is not academic, though some humanists and knowledge workers might enjoy it.

  40. ICYMI: Monday's post on A Mind Forever Voyaging returns to the subject of time---this time as an element of modular narrative design, plus a bit about the existential implications of Perry's self-awareness. Much more on that in a few days! Part 7 of 9.

"The loneliness of PRISM is ultimately his/its most heroic quality, since, like the mortal dread of the heroes of fantasy, it must go felt and unfelt at the same time."

  41. I think I don't like doors in parser games anymore, unless they're awesome like the guarded door in Enchanter.

I say this even though I do have two problem doors in my WIP 😞

  43. Extremely sick and unable to sleep. Guess it's time to fire up Planetfall a little early for the Interactive Fiction Club! This version was made by @spacehobo and it is gorgeous. It's a shame I'm playing it on my phone!

  44. Alright, getting things ready for an interactive fiction club! If folks are interested, I think we can start December off with a classic infocom game, Planetfall. I've got a discord up & running, which folks can join, here discord.gg/cf69sWjEE5

It's not mandatory, but if you are interested, you can also just join the discussion here on Mastadon with the hashtag #ifclub The club will rotate each month between a classic text adventure snd a more modern interactive fiction

  45. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

  46. So would anyone be interested in having an infocom game club? One that is dedicated to playing strictly old text adventures of the infocom/Legend Entertainment era monthly and talking about it?

    #infocom #infocomodon #if #interactivefiction

  47. #IF hot take. Infocom games hold up to modern day. It is just a different style of game and design that isn't common and takes an open mind to understand how the game wants you to engage with it. They are worth your time to play. #infocom #infocomodon

  48. #Hitchhiker's puzzles are HARD, and by today's lazy puzzling standards, impossible. I have taught this game, and my students can't get through. But maybe I'm forgetting that I used hints back in the day lol #infocom #infocomodon
