  1. Do not start writing unless you love it! – Guest blog by Christian Baines

Christian Baines is an author friend who recently posted the rant below on Facebook. Like me, he is on the indie side of the author scale, and what he wrote here is full of truth. He gave me permission to republish his words.

Do not start writing unless you love it and are willing to work to get good at it.

Seriously, those are the only reasons.

You will not make a pile of money. You will not get famous. You will be constantly told that ‘anyone’ or AI can do what you devoted years to learning and perfecting. You will be devalued. You will deal with sales avenues that constantly change their own rules to your disadvantage. Most events you do will leave you in the red financially.

You will spend hours physically hauling books around at those events or sitting at a table trying to smile through crippling self doubt. You will stare at the zero on a sales report wondering WTF you’re doing wrong (spoiler alert: nothing).

You will be bombarded with unsolicited advice and ‘rules’ to follow. You will get several AI generated emails a day promising marketing miracles because some idiot somewhere thinks you’re making enough money to be worth scamming. You will stare at notices for literary retreats and workshops costing thousands and wonder who the hell is coming up with that money.

You will have to network with people even though that is the polar opposite of natural for you. You will get bad reviews. You will be told you are an immoral or bad person because your book didn’t line up with a reader’s ideology.

You will lose years of marketing work with every shift in the social media landscape. And through it all you are expected to come up with a cracking story people will love.

Still want this job? Good. Because if you can handle all that and still love writing, you are the only type of person who should be doing it.

Occasionally, VERY occasionally, you might get lucky and shake some of these off. But if you’re fortunate enough to get several books out there, these are the demons you’ll be living with.

    Happy creating.

  2. Indie authors: when you uploaded your book for the final time on IngramSpark, did you get the sweats?

    Just me? 😆🤣😅

  3. I started to be bothered by the generative AI in my book covers and social media graphics.

So I cut out all the AI.

With not enough budget for an illustrator, model, photographer, or the right stock photos, I dabblered it up.

    First, I tried drawing.

Humbled, I obtained props, and took relevant snapshots with my phone.

Needs improvement, but good enough for now.

I was happy to attest to KDP that no AI was used for my updated books.

  4. We're excited to share this new novella, to be published in 2027. If you liked ORIGINS OF DESIRE IN ORCHID FENS, you will love Lynn Hutchinson Lee's follow-up, EUKARYA, which includes a recurring character you won't want to miss. Congrats on your new book, Lynn! We're thrilled to be publishing it.
