  1. Here's a slightly belated write-up of the results to IFComp 2025 and how my games fit into them. Includes shocking revelations about the authorship of not one, but TWO entries in this year's comp!

  2. The Interactive Fiction Competition 2025 is on now! Here's a post about my entry - Who Whacked Jimmy Piñata? - and the competition in general, plus some handy tips to help UK judges see the full selection of entries despite the Online Safety Act.

  3. Today I submitted my largest ever entry to the annual Interactive Fiction Competition. 49,506 words according to the Inform interpreter, and 57,968 if you include all my comments in the code. It's been a truly monstrous amount of work - I'm planning to take at least a couple of days off before getting started on my entry for 2026.

  4. I'm really quite happy with this. Characters now respond to "ask X about themselves" etc., but will distinguish between "himself" and "herself." It's a small detail, but I think it helps conversation feel more natural and avoids situations where a straightforward "ask" command with an existing response simply generates "There is no reply."

  5. More than a year since I first planned to do it, I've finally got my cover image for Who Whacked Jimmy Piñata?. I had to take it at night, both to get the lighting right, and because the neighbours would probably have had questions otherwise. You'll see why when the competition entries go live.

  6. More belated updates to my personal/professional website, now updating the interactive fiction section, to add my 2024 IFComp game, and mention - but not give the title yet - my next game due for release, which will also target IFComp, hopefully later this year. vivdunstan.co.uk/interactive-f #interactiveFiction #game #GameDev #IndieGame #IFComp #IFComp2025

  7. Hey, I'd like to draw everyone's attention to the best #IFComp game I've played this year:

    Sextuple L
    lithobreakers.itch.io/latex-le

It's about kink, transmasculity, sex, self, and social horror, and the writing, setting, and characterisation are the most utterly perfect and true things. Also, shout out to a game actually set in the North of England for a change.

It's a long one, but you still have until the 15th of October to give it 10 stars. (Edit: Not serious! Play the game and make your own minds! But you'll agree, I swear!)

  8. Found out when the IFComp 2024 results will be announced. In two weeks time, on a live stream on Twitch. I will be tuning in. I don't expect to rank highly, but will be happy if I improve on my showing last time I entered! Just delighted to have been able to finish another game to take part this year. And looking forward to seeing how everyone fares. ifcomp.org/about/schedule #IFComp #IFComp2024 #interactiveFiction #IndieGame #TextGame #GameDev #Twitch #Game #textAdventure

  9. The Interactive Fiction Competition 2024 is up and running, and I've got a game of my own in there. It's Quest for the Teacup of Minor Sentimental Value - an animated visual novel made using RPG Maker MV. #IFComp #IFComp2024 #RPGMaker #RPGMakerMV

  10. Brainstorming a new IF game (IFComp 2025 maybe?) and came up with 10 very rough ideas. One calls out to me the most strongly, but I may also include elements of another five. That should be enough for getting on with! Much to do, but excited. As with the last one I want to get the bulk of the design in place before coding. Many months of slowly musing over ideas to come. #InteractiveFiction #IFComp #GameDev #IndieGame #IndieGames #TextGames #CreativeWriting #Game

  11. It's the last day (until 23:59 Eastern Standard Time on 1st August 2024) to submit an intent to enter a new #interactiveFiction #game in #IFComp 2024. If you want to enter this year, don't miss out! You can't register after today. Your final finished game is due by 28th August, and the competition is open for judging in September. ifcomp.org #IFComp2024 #IndieGame #IndieGames #GameDev #TextGames

  12. Reminder to any fellow #interactiveFiction authors planning to enter #IFComp this year: you must submit an intent to enter no later than 1st August. Game files then due 28th August. Everything is running a month earlier this year. Don't leave it too late if you want to enter. Good luck! ifcomp.org #TextAdventure #GameDev #IndieGames #TextGames #IFComp2024

  13. Musing my next #interactiveFiction game, as I get near to the end of preparing my latest #game to go into #IFComp 2024. I've various other IF #games in long development, but fancy trying another shorter game, working out the #design in detail beforehand, then coding it up. Which worked well this time. And I had such fun working on this game I want to follow it with another project. #IndieGames #GameDev #TextAdventure #TextGames #CreativeWriting #IFComp2024 #GameDesign

  14. I'm entering a new #interactiveFiction #textAdventure #game in #IFComp next month. Have had huge help from some wonderful playtesters, helping me smooth the playing experience. Today my husband is playtesting for me. I am very nervous! He's played IF games since the 1990s, but erm yup. I'm currently avoiding the study where he is. His initial hiccup was getting an interpreter to work well on his #Linux, but happily now using Lectrote. Eek! #IFComp2024 #IndieGames #GameDev #TextGames #Playtesting

  16. I know everyone is focused on and excited about #IFComp starting very soon but let me toot my horn:

Tonight I've finished writing the transition between Act 3 and 4 of my parser-based #Cento - that is, I've strung together 74 sentences from 73 #InteractiveFiction games to make a "cutscene" that moves the story forward with a pretty big plot twist! And yes it reads pretty well 😀

This game a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. Onwards!

  17. Just wrote a postmortem for my #IFComp game "A Chinese Room", which is a great excuse to post about it.

A one or two reader experience, A Chinese Room is one story in two, an outsider's impression of Russia, a story of power, control, inhumanity, and love.

It is, in my opinion, the best thing I've ever written.

You can find the game here: milomesdag.itch.io/a-chinese-r
